Clinic Call-backs

Hi,

So I am a bit aggravated at my CF clinic because I called the CF nurse on Wednesday morning, left a message on the main CF nurse's voicemail with a detailed message that I needed new medication ordered and gave my pager number she could reach me at. I am leaving Sunday morning to go to Nashville for a conference and then to Aruba on Tuesday from there. So I will not be in the USA from 3/24-3/29. So, as much as I can wait another day or so (can get meds from Walgreens in Nashville), I can't wait until Tuesday!

So, no call-back... This is going on over 48 hours. I know I am not having a problem requiring hospital stay, etc, but seriously, how long do I have to wait to get a 5 minute call to figure things out? How long do you wait for a call-back? Do I call her now??

I am a nurse practitioner with prescriptive abilities, but I don't feel it is right (and probably isn't legal either) to self-prescribe the couple meds that I have run out of. It's just annoying since it's an easy call-back for meds that I need.

Any comments? Any suggestions on what I should do? I hate to be annoying to the clinic, but I have had to wait for a call-back to the point where I emailed the CF nurse (CC'ing my CF dr on the same email) so things finally got done.

wow.....that's not right and you shouldn't have to put in even one extra call. That makes their job more difficult to have to sift through multiple calls. I get a return call the morning of or the afternoon of my call to them. They are a small and efficient operation. The larger center I go to might require a 24 hour window to respond for anything non-emergency related; but, they will still respond. Best of luck to you in getting some better communication going with them.

The sad thing is that I love this clinic - I find the actual CF care is very good. It is just the follow-up calls that are very spotty, at least in my case. Others on here (the few I know) who see the same clinic may have another opinion. I know that I am not severe with CF, but I think you should still follow-up within a 24 hour period. The clinic staff did not say she was out of town so I can't use that rationale.

My chicago CF clinic called me back within 24 hours, if not sooner. I know there were less CF patients, but I felt that the clinic relayed information better perhaps. Granted, my Chicago CF clinic was not perfect, but I got call-backs within a good time frame.

I would hate to think that I would want to have the Chicago clinic back to get more prompt service. It's not like I am negligent on my med tracking... just want to start a new med, make sure I have enough meds for my vacation without missing days, etc.

That's terrible -- we have similar issues with the local cf clinic. I'm lucky if I'll get a call back within a few days. And once when I called to get a refill on albuterol, the nurse kept telling me there "was still some in there and to see if it floats" Huh? All the while I kept explaining - no albuterol in the brown bottle. Fortunately, our pharmacy now deals with faxing or calling the clinic if we've run out of refills.

With our CF clinic in the City, we usually get an immediate response. A call back and then they'll call the pharmacy -- next morning or later that afternoon the script is ready.

If you don't hear from them in a timely manner, I'd be tempted to write my own script and when you get back or at the next appointment, explain to them what happened and ask how you can avoid this in the future. If there's something else you need to do...

It doesn't matter if you don't have symptoms as severe as others. You're trying to avoid having more health issues, right? Plus, you're basically the customer and are paying for the clinic service..
