Katie and Zeke had clinic today. Katie is now 10 and Zeke is 2. We got to the hospital at 7:15 so Katie could have her yearly chest x-ray and usual PFT's done before we went to the clinic at 7:45.

We started out with 2 pharmacy students that wanted to review meds. That took an hour and my kids are mild. Zeke is only on Pancreacarb and Source CF, Katie is only on her Source CF and Zithromax 3x per week. We also had a very nice medical student who decided she would like to stay with us for the day to see what happens in clinic.

Then we saw the respiratory therapist, followed by the social worker and then the pulmonologist who we did have some questions to ask so it took a little longer. Plus he had to see 2 kids. Then the nutritionalist was in. We spent about 20 min with her. It is now 11 am and all we have left is the GI doc. The medical student we had went looking for the GI doc 2x and at noon I said. Enough is enough it is time to go. By then we had been there for almost 5 hours cooped up in our usual room. I stuck my head out the door and said to the nutritionalist and the Nurse practitioner who happend to be standing there that we were leaving. We really had no questions or problems for GI today and we had to go.

The CF nurse then came running up the hall after hearing this exchange. I was not snotty or mean but come on. She then said we do not know where the GI doc is right now anyway. Excuse me! Clinic days are Wed and Thurs am we saw he was in the building earlier did he forget he had clinic. Maybe there was a emergency but he failed to tell anyone he left? SO out we went.

That is unexcusable in my opinion. That is like saying that our kids are not important enought to keep somewhat of a schedule or keep us informed of what is happening. THis trip is a 80 mile drive, a day off work and out of school for 2 parents and 2 kids. I know everyone else is in our shoes also.

Was I out of line in your opinion? I really was not trying to be rude to anyone nor do I think I gave them that feeling.

Thanks for your time and sorry for the length.

You were not rude at all!!!!! I have done the same thing. With 2 kids it is hard enough to keep them contained for just an hour. I have even left when we are supposed to meet with someone I needed to talk to. I know that most issues can be dealt with over the phone.
Blessings,
Missa

You were more patient than I would have been. I would have cut it off sooner than that and just said we can't spend any more time & let's reschedule. Sometimes even a well run clinic has a bad day, but if they have good customer service training they'll be happy to call the day a loss and try again another time.

Not rude at all. We once walked out of the clinic because they didn't have an exam room for us and the waiting room was packed, so after an hour, we left. Our last clinic appointment ever (we don't go anymore - see the head cf doctor at the peds clinic) we once arrived at clinic at 7:45 and didn't see a SOUL until 9:30 and that was the dietician, then I started marking down how long it was between specialist -- half hour to 45 minutes and we still were supposed to go down for blood work and xrays. It was after 1 before we got out of there. DS needed lunch. I'd brought snacks and juice, but it wasn't anything substantial. DH kept wandering up front to see if they could find the pulmonologist who was the last person we needed to see. We suspected the staff had all gone to lunch and had forgotten us -- on clinic days apparently they have a potluck. Grr!

With us I suspect we were being punished for being difficult. Previously we'd complained about the long wait in the community waiting room. When we arrived this time, the nurse put us in a room and then tried to switch us with another family and I'd refused. It's just so frustrating -- I can understand if there's an emergency and the doctor has gotten called away, but this was inexuseable. We were the LAST family there and had been cooling our heels forever.
