Clubbed Fingers

My finger nails are starting to round out a little at the ends, but they don't look all that different then normal. I don't know what clubbed finger nails look like, I've never seen some.

Can any of you post a picture of your fingers if they're clubbed? I'm quite curious.

And does it mean anything once that starts to happen? Is it a symptom of less oxygen?

Thanks.

Mine are doing the same, and are a bit bigger at the cuticles. It's not too bad...yet. I think i started noticing them in high school, so I'm not soo worried, cause they haven't progressed too much since then

Sorry i don't have a picture..but they say it is from less oxygen in the bloodstream. I think it can also be from inflammation. You can get it with heart problems and even cirhosis (sp) of the liver. People aren't really too sure, I think. I would say it is a combo of inflammation and O2 sats, cause my sats never went below 100/99 until like 18...and i started seeing it at 17. Just a guess though.

I also heard of someone saying that when taking GSH, that their clubbing lessened or dissapeared. It might have been mandy, not sure. Regardless, GSH is crucial in antioxidant support and inflammation, so that's another reason why i think it could be inflammation.

Regardless, take those antioxidants! heheh

Ooooh, I just started taking GSH pills a few days ago actually. Thanks for the explanation. My doctors have told me I only have clubbing a tiny bit. So I can't tell.

I would love to see pics of someone with just mild clubbing. Everything you see online is all moderate to severe clubbing.

I have very mild clubbing and will attach some pictures. My fingers don't have the typical "club" look yet and most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference until you compare them to "normal" nails. The nail beds are really spongy and the shape my fingers and nails make is more of a "^" than a "v", if that makes any sense.

Thanks so much for posting these photos Emma. As you said your clubbing is mild. These photos help to give me and others an idea of what to expect with normal progression.

My 9 yr old boy they say has very mild clubbing. I asked the doc this week about GSH - she didn't act like that should be taken (or it hasn't been proven or whatever) Do you think that is too young to start on that. And if not - what kind or what dose?? They just started him on pulmozyme and the 3 days of Zithromycin. Tobi for 28 days and Cipro (he's fighting a cold). He takes Vit E and 2 multi vitamins and albuterol too.

I have 'digital' clubbing (not sure what this means).
Probably moderate to severe, I would guess. Toes are too. I could paint a sunset on those babies!
PM me if you want me to email you a picture. I'm not sure how to post a picture here

Reece has clubbing in his fingers & toes. I will take a pic of them.....but remember I have a "film" camera so it might take awhile.

The nurses & residents ALWAYS come by to look at his clubbing when hes in the hospital. Sometimes I feel like hes a freak show. *shrugs*

These are very helpful, thanks for posting. I've now learned that clubbing can happen in your toes too. I had no idea. That illustration is a good one.

Lynda, that's okay, I think I understand what they look like now. I know what to look for now.

I wonder if you drop in o2 sats for a while and develop clubbing, then if you get over a bunhc of bugs and increase your sats and fev1, if it can go away. Sounds like it's possibe since someone had this experience with GSH. It kind of seems like my thumbs were once more bumpy like how the illustration shows, but they're not anymore. Mine have gotten a little wider over the years, but I don't have the bumpy effect, or the super wide look. I'll keep my eye out though!

I remember posting a picture a long time ago with clubbing, I did a search on google or something on images and posted that link.

My nails are probably mild they look about like Emmas, but when I get home from work this evening Ill take some pictures of my nails and show you what they look like.

Lynda digital clubbing just means clubbing. (it's just another name for it).
Occasionally it's called Hippocratic fingers as well.

As for cause of clubbing it's really not established what causes it.
Although many of these associations are recognised (such as the link with lung cancer), some are based on a few observations and might be false. Prospective studies of patients presenting with clubbing have not been performed, and hence there are no reliable numbers as to the distribution of the causes and the prognosis.

Which is why I would not suggest taking GSH. How can you cure something that you don't know the root to?
I know that even though I'm almost 4 years post tx and my o2 is always 98-100 my fingers are clubbed, I'd hoped they would get better but they haven't. They always have been even pre-tx when my o2 dropped to the lower 90's, no change.
