Hi Christi,

We use Saline Nasal Spray(simply saline 3%) when Maggie has a cold, and even when she doesn't to keep her nose clean. After I squirt the spray up her nose, I try to get her to blow the boogers out. She's sometimes not cooperative, but I think the nasal spray does help. she has a cold right now that seems to be petering out. Also, lots of fluids, rest , handwashing. We get the flu shot every year. Warm baths when she has acold to get the boogers flowing. I also have been using Epsom salts in the bath when she has a cold, don't know if it really helps but I'm sure it doesn't hurt her. Extra vest time as well. That's about it, she's also on Cuturelle(a probiotic) once a day because she freuqently needs anti's.

I use zinc, I used to only take it when I thought I might be catching somthing, but since I've been taking NAC I have started it full time. So far it's been great, I started to get a cold my wife had and increased the zinc to twice a day and so far it hasn't developed into anything major(knock on wood).

We use Elderberry syrup at times when we know we've been around those with the flu. We use UMCKA for respiratory/colds at the first sign of them and it shortens duration and reduces severity (our experience). On a daily basis he takes probiotic, DHA, Taurine, Hawthorn, and regular ADEK. I attempt to add greens where I can but most of the time it is in the form of a greens powder in a smoothie. He didn't drink those until about 18 months old though. Lavender essential oil is great in baths and rubbed on feet...there is research that essential oils can benefit the immune system.

There are a few juices which help reduce inflammation like Goji or Acai which can be added to a little apple juice. We feel controlling inflammation throughout the body especially the gut helps the immune system and benefits the lungs.

Alternative medicines like, homeopathy, naturopathy and other modalities like Reiki can be wonderfully gentle ways to boost a child's immune system and can compliment traditional medicine quite well. We have lots of links and resources on our site below if you're interested.

I hope Ashton is on the mend and stays well. Have a wonderful holiday season.

Warmly,

Jody,

what exactly is UMCKA? I've seen it at the natural foods store. but I'm not quite sure what's in it.

Thanks,
Rebecca

From the bottle: It is an extract of a plant called Pelargonium sidoides (a geranium species harvested in South Africa) which "relieves cold symptoms and reduces the duration and severity of secondary throat, sinus and bronchial irritations."

THis site has Elderberry and UMCKA products if you are unable to find it locally. I have taken it too and it really works nicely. <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.evitamins.com/product.asp?pid=5993

Hope this helps ;-)
