colistyn

Hey, everyone.

OK, so since I've been attending the clinic in my town versus driving 450 miles each way to my all-time favorite clinic, they've insisted on rx'ing sodium chloride 0.9% to mix with colistyn instead of the "usual" sterile water.

Just curious if anyone else does their coli with .9% sodium chloride versus sterile water? I still get it in the flip top vials so I administer it exactly the same way... 2 mL per coli vial.

My clinic right now is adamant that you do NOT inhale sterile water, BUT according to CF services pharmacy (and my last 2 clinics), that is how 95% of the CF docs rx it. They say sodium chloride just may be less irritating to the lungs but otherwise, there is no reason to NOT use sterile water.

Has anyone heard this? Does anyone do anything differently? I had used sterile water for YEARS, but they absolutely will not rx it here, and I sometimes wonder if that is why I don't feel as good on coli anymore? Is it possible the dilutent has anything to do with how the med gets into the lungs and does its thing? Either way, my clinic doesn't care if that's how I've always done it... they will NOT change this rx... so either way it looks like i'm stuck.

Thanks,

Hi Sonia,

I'm assuming you mean Coly Mycin - (in short: Colistin) via the nebuliser?

Well I was on Colistin for years and years since I was 10 (I am now 27) and I have always mixed Colistin with sodium chloride.
But instead of mixing 2 mls per vial I mixed 4mls per vial (because I was having the whole 2 vials twice daily). I don't know what dose you are having but I guess it varies from cfer to cfer.

Also to answer your question on mixing sodium chloride and whether it makes the lungs more irritating: I didn't find it too bad, however I always thought it was the Colistin itself that made me feel tighter in the chest.
Huh funny you should mention that you use to mix up Colistin with sterile water, as I just used the chloride.

Anyway that's just my info on the matter - take it or leave it <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
I hope all goes well with trying the sodium chloride w Colisten

I've never used sterile water for anything nebulised, only sodium chloride ( my doc always told me to use sodium chloride).

As for Colistin, I mix it with 3mls of sodium chloride, because the doc said it is less irritating this way. But I know people who use 4mls, it doesn't matter how much you dilute it, the base substance remains the same, it only takes that much more time to nebulise.

I've always nebbed my Colimycine with 3ml 9% sodium chloride.
That's how I always got it from my pharmacy. A box with a vial with the powder and a vial with 3ml 9% NaCl
