Confusion about Sinuses

I keep hearing people talk about chronic sinues problems and so forth. My question is when you say chronic or just any sinues problem are you experiencing thick yellow to green mucus from the nose or normal everyday congestion that won't go away? My daughter, who is 2 1/2 seems to have constant congestion. Mostly clear, sometimes may turn thick and yellow in color. But once I clear her nose out with Ayr it seems to help and bring it back to a clear color. She always seems to stay congested but staying more up in the nose, making it harder to suction out, should she be put on an anitbotic? But to my understanding, at times mucus can turn yellow to green and not be an infection. Also on Nasonex to help with this problem. What are some of the problems some of you are experiencing or someone with a young child with same diagnosis? Thanks for listening and any replies to help understand.Mother of a wonderful daughter w/CF

Unfortunately sinus problems are very common with CFers. The severity varies from person to person...as with the lungs. Chronic means that it persists and/or progresses over a long period of time. In CF...they usually label it as chronic sinusitis. Have a question for you though...has your daughter been checked for nasal polyps? Polyps will cause lots of congestion as well...my younger brother (also with CF) always had a runny nose as a kid...finally when he was about 12 they decided to check for polyps...and found several that they removed....he was much better after that. Others like me....dont have much congestion...but have sinus headaches...continuously. I've been having so many probs lately...that I've been on antibiotics now for over a month and I'm still not getting better. I've had 2 major sinus surgeries...and a few minor ones as well. Unfortunately as I said...it is just a common thing because of the mucous in CFers being so thick...it cant drain out of the sinuses well either. Usually when the mucous is light green...more times than not...that means infection. You want it to be clear or lt yellow. I hope all this helps you a little....Good luck! Dea30 w/CF

My son's sinuses are just always filled with mucous no matter what we do (antibiotics, nasal irrigation, nasal sprays, even surgery.) But, he doesn't always have a runny nose and to just look at it, it doesn't "look" like it's congested all the time but it is. If the ENT takes an x-ray, ct-scan, or uses the endoscope to look at his sinuses, they are always filled. The only time he actually has yellow or green drainage from his nose is during an "acute" flare up of his sinuses, usually caused by bacteria and usually responds somewhat to the antibiotic (the colored drainage stops). If he has an acute "allergy flare up" of his sinuses, he'll drain thick clear stuff but the majority of the time, his nose "looks" clear and his sinuses just drain down his throat, causing him to cough more, etc. It does flare up his asthma, too. I don't know if that helps answer your question?? Basically, his everyday symptoms are mild - dark circles under his eyes, clearing of his throat, pnd, rubbing his nose, picking at it, etc. Don' t know if that answers your question or helps??? He's 6.

HI,Im a 22 year old female who has cf and servere sinusittus. I have had 5 major sinus surgerys and am going to have my 6th soon. I have them about every 2 years. The best thing that I have found to help with sinus problems is a water pik. Now its just a normal water pik that you can buy at walmart but you talk to the pharmistist and have them order a nose adapter for you. 3 times a day I flush my sinus with luke warm salt water. I learned this from a specilaitst that did my first surgery. It has really helped out in keeping my frontal sinus's open between surgerys. I mean heck they have even drilled holes in the bottm of my sinus's to help them drain and that doesnt even work, so I will take any kind of help that I can get. I have had alot of experience with the sinus issues, it is my main issuse and anyone can email me at amdayspring@bellsouth.net if they want to talk about it.

My doctors found out how severe my sinus problems were when I was about 11. It was discovered then that all the lung infections I'd been having were really sinus infections that drained down into my lungs. Once they started treating my sinuses - antibiotics, surgeries, office visits to suction/wash, nasal sprays - my lung infections have never come back and I am now 25. I'd say to keep a very close eye on the sinuses. Do not hesitate to mention what you see to your docs. For me, when my nose is draining (it is always a dark green like grass or broccoli) I'm ok, but when I stop draining it is because everything has clogged up and I'm headed for an infection. Also, no matter how many times or how thoroughly I brush my teeth, when I have a sinus infection my breath smells bad. Boy, am I glad my husband loves me. My sinuses are my main problem and I've had a number of different procedures, tools, antibiotics, etc. used over the span of the last 14 years and 20 surgeries, so feel free to ask. hcmnjl@vvm.com
