Graycie has been doing pretty well, she is still testing positive for c-diff and is on long term vanco. She is always scratching, I mean since birth she has scratched herself until she bleeds. She is low on alot of her vitaman levels and she does take vitamax, zinc, and vitamin d along with all of her other meds. Does this itching have anything to do with CF? I know with everything else she has had to deal with this seems really low on the list of things to worry about but the poor baby digs at herself and it drives her nutty. Just wondering if anyone else has a problem with this?

I assume you mean vaginal itching? This is due to a yeast overgrowth and IS likely a vaginal yeast infection. Let the doctor know and she can likely take an antifungal oral med to relieve it. Adults take one pill of diflucan for this. Is she on probiotics to prevent it? I take Garden of Life Primal Defense to help prevent this problem from escalating.

Its not vaginal itching. Its her skin. I was wondering if her low vitamin levels could be the cause of the itching and scratching? Or if this is totally unrelated to her CF?

Oh apologies. Sorry I just haven't heard of itchy skin in relation to cf but it is an epidemic in little ones in general. It's due to all the frangrances and over washing mostly. Are you using All Free and Clear on her clothes? Also, soemthing like Burts Bees for soap/shampoo. Stay away from J&J and other stuff with all the chems in it. Also don't let her soak in the tub just wash and out. Only bath a few times a week and aquaphor her whole body after she gets out. In addition, I would chk her vit levels. My lo is prone to dry skin. We do this and he stays very supple.

There is a type of dermatitis associated with CF (and has been the presenting symptom leading to dx in some cases!) It's associated with malnutrition and deficiencies in protein, fatty acids and zinc. Given her short gut, PI, c.diff and the resultant diarrhea it can cause I would definitely want to check into that. It appears that this dermatitis involves a rash though.

here is a link:

eta> I do agree with Lauren's suggestions, however, of trying bath products free of scents & dyes, 'free and clear' detergents and whatnot to see if that helps, and a moisturizer like she suggests (or one her dr can recommend). That can make a big difference.

It could also be from the long term vanco. Vanco has always made me itch! When I'm on it, I'm always on 50mg benadryl, too. Itching and redness is the most common side effect with vanco.

Hope your kiddo feels better soon!
