Constipation in Toddler

Hi everyone,

I am becoming increasingly stressed out with my daughter's recent constipation. It all started a week ago Monday. Suddenly, she is crying, straing, and just plain miserable trying to poop. When it finally came out last Mon. it was big and hard. Our clinic prescribed Miralax for a few days and she seemed to go back to normal. Well, two days later it started again. I could not get her to take the stool softener for the life of me. So, I had to do an enema. Well, they were still hard after that! I'm worried she was on the way to a blockage or something. Again, we've had a couple good days here, and now today she is miserable again. To top it all off she also has a lovely, large hemmoroid! Just when that starts to look better this all begins again. Does anyone have any ideas? I am so stressed that she is beginning to have these issues. I hope it is a phase or something and not her body changing (she had been totally regular up until a week and a half ago.) Any ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Are you giving her Miralax every day no matter what her bowel movements are like? Quite often it becomes a part of the "maintenance" rather then treating each episode.

If you havent been told to do such or thought about it I would highly recommend it. Constipation in general isnt fun that you run into the issues that come easier to a CFer and its more serious.

Sadly just when things seem "normal/routine" we get thrown something else which may or may not remaind a part of daily life. Her body might just be going thru a "phase", but again preventive maintenance is best rather then treating each time it acts up. That is probably one reason she doesnt want to take the med is when she finally pooped it hurt like hell. Almost as much as the pain of it building up.

HUGS & good luckl

Have you checked her enzymes? If they're too high or not the right brand for her, constipation is a side effect.

Cash has always had constipation. He takes Miralax daily. This summer he has been having some trying times. The general consensus has been that it is just more difficult to keep him hydrated enough. We have increased his miralax, cut down on his milk, limited his time outdoors and used dulcolax suppositories. So far we have avoided enemas or 'clean outs'. Good luck! I hope it is just a temporary situation for you.
