constipation issues

Hi there everyone. I am still new here, but I have found a lot of help and advice so I come to ask your help. Our 18 month old daughter is having occasional problems with constipation. Our general dr. says to use Miralax, the CF dr's aren't to found of the idea. It seems about every 3 weeks or so we have a day or two with really intense issues where she cries all day and struggles to pass a stool. It is aweful, and we never know when or why it happens. First off, have any of your dr's had a problem with Miralax? Or do they have other ideas. We would love to have a natural product if there is one to be had. Please help, she is not potty trained yet, but if this continues she may never want to try. Thank you.

We had issues with constipation around this age -- was also about the time we switched from formula to whole milk w/cream. The daycare director's theory was that DS was a poop holder. Whether he associated pooping with pain, fear, who knows, but I'd try prunes, increase fiber, more fruit... Nothing seemed to work. We DID use milk of magnesia a couple of times as per the doctor's instructions but it wasn't ongoing and it was fairly short lived -- thank goodness.

A friend of mine's granddaughter is on Miralax all the time. In fact that's how she was diagnosed -- when she was 18 months old she was having constipation issues, was really tiny (failure to thrive) and the pediatrician said "lets test her to rule out CF".

Hi! My son just turned 2 and we were having this problem a couple months back. Like once every two weeks or so, Vinny would get pretty bad, belly kind of hard, obviously in discomfort. And he would walk funny, and refuse to sit down on his butt. And he was just moaning all day, I felt so bad. But the poop was right there (TMI, I know!) Even suppositories didn't help.

I talked to the CF doctor, she felt he didn't like how it felt and was holding it in. This explains the funny walk! Anyway, holding it was making it even harder. She said I could use colace syrup and metamucil (or benefiber or whatever). When I saw those symptoms starting up, I'd give him the colace. Otherwise I gave him 1/2 teaspoon metamucil in his morning milk, just to make the stool softer.

The CF nutritionist said to be sure to give him water and juice. Tomatoes, corn, and peas are good too. Plus popcorn, graham crackers, shredded wheat, and wheat bread. Also, not too much milk, cheese, or bananas (which I realize is un-avoidable with an 18 month old!).

I'm not sure what's causing your daughter's constipation, but with Vinny it was just typical toddler, holding it in because he didn't like it. This all helped, eventually I added less and less metamucil or citrucal, and he has just adjusted to dealing with how it feels to poop. He still gives us problems occasionally, if I see him starting those behaviors, I give him some apple juice w/ metamucil, and
lay off the milk for a couple hours.

Anyway, I hope some of this is useful. I found this website very helpful.<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.keepkidshealthy.com/welcome/treatmentguides/constipation.html">http://www.keepkidshealthy.com...ides/constipation.html</a>

Very well could be poop holding. I didn't believe it at the time, but figured the daycare director with 30 years experience probably was right.

I can remember putting DS in the bath tub, hoping he'd relax and eventually go. Once he got very upset, so I swooped him out of the tub and plop, plop onto the bathroom rug and he screamed in terror -- as if omigosh,THAT came out of ME! A few weeks later, same thing happened and I got him on the potty chair just in time -- poor kid refused to sit on the potty chair for almost a year afterward.

Danny started having this problem last Nov. His CF and GI docs decided to put him on Miralax and he has been on it ever since. They said thatI can try to wean him if I want and see if he gets constipated again. I will probably try that soon. Basically they wanted to get him regular and make him forget about the bad experience of being constipated.

Psyllium powder is a natural, non-addictive fiber which promotes bowel health. It can be mixed easily into juice or smoothies to keep things going. Ground flax seeds are great as well for fiber and high in DHA, an anti-inflammatory fatty acid important in CF. We tend to go the other way with loose stools when something arises.

There are some foods that can tend to be constipating like dairy (too much cheese and yogurt), banana (I was surprised by that one), and eggs. It can help to eat these things in moderation or cut them out for a while if they seem to cause too many issues. Sometimes just increasing water and fiber will do the trick. Other foods that add fiber are raw unpeeled fruits and veggies, pop corn, prunes, spinach, vegetable soup, whole grains (soaking grains make then easier to digest as well). A probiotic can also help promote healthy guts. Lots of water.

Just some thoughts...best of luck.
