Control III

I am going away tomorrow and I'm on Cayston. I'm trying to avoid flying with the electric steam sterilizer. It was suggested to me by the CF Pharmacy to use Control III solution to sterilize the Altera handset during my trip. I am not familiar with Control III so I have a few questions for those of you who currently use this method or used it in the expanded access program.

1. Any tips on where to buy Control III? I have called a few pharmacies and surgical supply stores in my area and no one seems to carry it.

2. From my understanding it is a concentrated solution that needs to be mixed with water...can you mix with tap water? or should it be distilled? sterile?

3. After you sterilize with the Control III, do the pieces need to be rinsed off or does the solution just evaporate?

4. Can you use the Control III to clean the metal head? Or is it best to just soak that in alcohol? Do you rinse with water before soaking the head in alcohol?

Thanks so much to anyone who can help me out with this!!

Not sure where to buy it because mine was provided for me when I first got Cayston.
Yes, I mix it with HOT tap water.
After you've mixed the water/control solution, you need to pour a little bit into a separate bowl for the metal head so it doesn't slosh around with the other pieces.
Yes, the pieces need to be rinsed off thoroughly (again in hot tap water) and then air dried. Let me know if you have more questions. I soak ALL my nebs in this solution ONCE A WEEK and never boil, or use the dishwasher.

I use the TRIO AKA Eflow for my albuterol and Tobra or Colistin depending on the month. I do not use the control solution just seems to confusing. I do keep metal head in alcohol when not in use. And once a day I put metal head and plastic pieces in my Avent Steam Sterlizer (not the microwave one!). This seems to work out fine. I also clean the metal head with distilled water and soap. I use the distilled in the steamer too. The plastic pieces I clean with warm tap water and soap.

Good Luck!

Thank you. musclemania, the only thing I am concerned about is rinsing with tap water after sterilizing them since there is a chance bacteria can be found in tap. I guess another option would be to rinse with sterile water boiled on the stove or in the microwave after it has cooled down.
