Well it seems like it is the thing going arund latley for a lot of us. After I posted on tuesday night I went to bed. Now keep in mind that I went into clinic 2 weeks ago and my FEV1 was down 9% so I started IV's. I had been on IV's for a week and a half and was feeling better, no cough, improved engery and thought I was on the up and up. At 3:20 I woke up coughing and tasted it in my mouth and just knew. I had so much this time that I could feel it gurgling in my right lung and knew that more was comming b/c I could feel it bleeding. I coughed up prob around a cup of stright blood and went back into the bedroom and woke up nick and told him to call 911. I was scared that if we drove it would contiune and what if I passed out or couldnt breathe. By the time EMS got here it had pretty much settled down to mainly complete bloody mucus. They took me into the local ER did test then transfered me by ems to my hospital in nashville about an hour away. I havent coughed up any more blood but I was really shocked about it. Now I am on lovenox a blood thinner for my factor 5 liden and I know that this contributed to the more blood then normal that I coughed up. This is my first time ever being on IV's and coughing up blood.

Has anyone else been on IV's and had an episode like this? I thought I was better but I guess there was a big infection spot that burst a blood vessel.

I have been on IVs many times & still had the blood.

Originally my doctor would argue that if I had hemoptysis that it HAD to be infection.

After it happening IN THE HOSPITAL she realized that yes I was right....many other factors can aggrivate it.

Dry air, straining to cough too hard, fatigure, too much caffein, hormone (PMS is a killer for me so pregnancy hormones might be similiar) & dehyration are many triggers for me.

I am sorry that you are having this so early. Hopefully its a fluke & the lovenox was a big factor & nothing more then that will come of it.

BTW in the hospital when it happened. I usually felt much better in my lungs so IMHO there are many times that the meds are getting through a bunch of crap somewhere & part of it all coming out is the blood.

HUGS

I'm sorry you are going through this. I know it's a lot scarier to deal with the unexpectedness of cf once you are pregnant or a mom. We try so hard to take care of ourselves, our loved ones, and do everything right. Then this happens. WTF! Well here's a hug for you.

I have coughed blood when I have been at the tail end of antibiotics (orals). While I was pregnant my hemoptysis all but went away. A week before I had him it came back though. Since I had my bronchial artery embolization in 2/08 I only bleed a little when I am getting an exacerbation. And it's usually just some streaking not pure blood.

I wonder if you could get an embolization while pregnant? Of course you could pass on the anethesia but I think they use radioactive isotopes (contrast) that would be contraindicated.

I guess you also need to evaluate the risk/benefit ratio of the blood thinner for your other pre-existing condition. Remmber that most women with that illness probably don't have bleeding problems. I don't know anything about it so this is just general advice.

I do know that my cf doc would overrule my OB during my pregnancy. He definitely could see the big picture of my body much better. It was pretty obvious that the OB is most concerned with delivering a healthy baby.

Again it's about risk vs. benefit for everything. We don't want to just deliver a healthy baby but also to maintain our health so that we can care for our LO's for a long, long time.

Things will be okay. There is still so much change going on in your body getting settled in to having this little being living within you. In a few weeks you and your body will be in much a better rhythm. And you will be feeling him/her kick. It is the most wonderful thing.

I do. Lately though when I start coughing up blood my doc has started me on vit k for 2 weeks...and it always helps!

Its so scarey to have stuff happen and be preggo -even if its "normal" stuff
