Actually, is is VERY normal to cough up blood in your sputem. You can break blood vessles when you're coughing hard. It can also be caused by infection. It usually isn't anything to get upset about, even though it looks awful. But there are a few things to watch for :are you bringing up more blood than mucus, is it BRIGHT red? If it doesn't stop on its own and you bring up blood every time you cough, or if it seems to get worse, then you should call your doc and they may advise you to go to the ER. Because it can be a clue of infection, keep track of when it happens so you can mention it to your doc at your next visit.
