I have a 2 and half year old and I'm trying to teach him how to cough during and after treatments. And when I ask him to cough he just looks at me or say's "No cough". So I was wondering if anyone has some good ideas on how to teach him how to cough or get him to cough.
Thanks

Yes....tough question. I joke with my 2.5 yr old daughter during treatments by making an exaggerated coughing noise then tell her to do the same - sometimes she coughs back and sometimes she doesn't!

I agree. With my 2 and a half year old, i cough then ask her to do it. I then kind of joke and tell her to be louder and then it becomes a little contest. "cough loud" then i make a super exagerrated cough. Works most of the time.

There is a mecanical way to do it when they are young, the RT who does my dd CPT have been doing it and still does it when she does not feel like cooperating. Basically you need to press firmly with 2 fingers in the middle of her neck, there is a bone there that makes them cough.

Hi,
My Asia is 3.
I was told to push down her chest - squeeze it and a bit downwards after CPT. At the same time Asia is to blow air like trying to fog up a mirror. I acctually give her a mirror and then we draw a smile on it. She is sitting then on my lap. Sometimes she cought - sometimes not... it's a begining of a tehnique out terapetist tries to teach our daughter.
The mecanical way ymikhale wrote about - acctually doesn't work anymore on Asia .... we used when she was smaller.
Good luck

I have some ideas about working the lungs that may be fun for a 2 year old; blowing bubbles, pretending to blow out birthday candles, singing, jumping up and down on a mattress. swim lessons.

These are some of the thing we did for our now almost 8 year old with CF. She now can do breathing techniques , like huff coughing to clear her airway(when she is sick( started PFT's at 5 years old... We didn't do coughing techniques until recently, this year I feel these techniques have really helped her when she gets a respiratory virus, but not til this age was she able to comprehend the technique.
