Coughing is sooo embarassing for me!

I'm 23 years old with cf, diagnosed at 6 months. I was so young when I was diagnosed so it's not like a know anything else but lately coughing for me is so embarassing. I know this may sound a little petty but am getting to the point where I don't like to go anywhere because I'm too embarassed to cough, and I'm a very social person. I was just hoping you could share some of your views to help me see this whole situation differently.

Thanks, Alessia

I totally understand how you feel. While I do agree with Amy, at least for me when I cough I don't bring up sputum so it is embarassing AND I get no real big benefit from it. I don't like going to movies or plays because of it. Last time I went to a play the woman next to me gave me cough drops which made me feel extra bad!

The way I view it, is that I don't have a choice. If I go to a movie I make sure I have water and some type of hard candy to suck on so I don't cough as much. I just try and not look at anyone. I don't want it to interfere with my social life, so I try and just not pay any attention to it. Most people are too afraid to say anything anyway so I just hope they go away.

Not much help as I also get embarassed but do know that you are not alone<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

hello, im 21/cf from england. i totally understand you when you say you get embarrassed to cough. living in england, were it is absolutely freezing, most people who dont no me think i cough because of the cold weather, and it doesnt even enter there head that i have cf. it isnt uncommon to hear healthy people in england coughing, sneezing wheezing, because in winter,so many people are ill with all those nasty bugs in the air.also alot of people who dont no me and hear me cough think i smoke, which isnt true atall. all that matters is that the people who no me and love me, accept me for who i am, and thats all that matters. when im out with friends partying, i must cough so much, but i dont even notice, and i no that my friends dont mind.think there all used to it by now!

Yeah i hear ya! i'm 21 with Bronchiecstasis, which is like CF. I have a chronic cough and always cough up mucus. Physio doesn't do it alone, and i am getting a Nebulizer next week. Coughing is sooooooo embarassing. The way i look at it though, is people don't know you every place you go, so they will just assume that you have a nasty cold.

I know for myself, the more i am out walking around, like on campus, the more i cough b/c it moves the mucus. I just go to the bathroom and lock the stall door and cough up as much as i can. No one will know which person in what stall is hacking, so don't be too embarassed. What matters most is how you feel really. I understand though. If there is one thing i don't want to have forever, it's this stupid cough. And i probably will always have it.

My daughter hates coughing at school or at the cinema, other places as yet she doesn't care.

She was sooo happy the other day, she went to the cinema and she made sure to have some mentos on
her. She came home and said yahhhhh I only coughed twice <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I hope that when she gets worse that she won't just sit at home, as quality of life is important.

hey i totally understand! i go through mood swings where im like 'oh no! im going to upset everyone!' to 'ahh screw it, if they care then they shouldnt because they dont know me!'

haha but im almost always self concious in the movie theater. all i can say is, is that you should try and keep your head up...people who judge you don't matter, so just focus on yourself and not them :p
