Sorry Carrie that this has happened. Bleeding can happen for many reasons as you see from the above posts which is so annoying because it make it harder to deal with.

I have found when I started to chart the bleeding that the episode ususally happened just days before my monthly cycle began but there were exceptions to this. Thankfully it has been 5 months since I have had hemoptysis and it was only 1/2 teaspoon, which compared to coughing up a 1/3 of a cup or more is relatively small. Calling your doctor and getting his input is most important. Usually streaks are not anything to be concerned about but if it is bright red pure blood coming out then it is important to have it determined if an infection is present.

Having vitamin K at hand is also important. Some take it all the time, others like me only take it for a short time when bleeding occurs. Has your blood clotting level been checked lately?

When bleeding does occur I am told to wait for 24 hours till the bleeding passes before starting up Hypertonic Saline (if you are on it) and the vest or whatever method you use for airway clearance.

Trying to remain calm, which I know is extremely difficult to do, is very important. Just know that the episode will pass. And with each passing hour of being blood free you will mentally feel better. Then the hours turn into days then months. So for peace of mind call your doctor, get it checked out and then know that their are many cfer's who deal with this. I had my first of many bleeds at 18 yrs old...that's 30 years ago and I am still doing well.

Keeping you in prayer.

Since its the first time for you I would have things checked out. For those of us who are too familiar with hemoptysis usually can tell what our triggers are. Stress is a big one for me as well as PMS & too much caffein. Given that you dont know for sure, you are better off to check things out so you have something to work with if it happens again. You did the most common things except you didnt mention if you take Vitamin K. Most of us use ADEK, but some of us also use additonal Vitamin K in addition to that. Let us know how you are doing....</end quote></div>

Ah Ha! I'm not the only one! (PMS)! If I'm going to have any streaking bleeding, this is when it will usually happen! I feel better now...

Where are you getting extra water soluble vitamin k? Or is it not the water soluble?

It requires a prescription to get the proper amount of vitamin k needed. Your cf doctor can help you with that.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Ditto....
I use to take 5 mg once a day then it was bumped to 5 mg twice a day. Now I am at 10 mg twice a day and have been since November.

Hmmm; many years ago, I was taking prescription vitamin k, but then my drs said they (the manufactorers) discontinued it and put me on ADEK, and I haven't heard anything about it since (and now I am at the adult clinic). I'll have to ask about it when they do my levels this appointment- if I take 2 vitamins a day (as recommended by dr), it makes me feel bad (apparently, I get this from my mom, I discovered one day in Walmart when she was vitamin shopping-lol), so I just take one. I would like to have the extra vitamin k, though, if I need it (sorry, didn't mean to highjack again...<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0">).
