hey,

Just wandering if anyone could tell me what they do in terms of medication for coughing up blood or if there are certain things i cn do to prevent this. I have cf and used to cough up blood nearly once a week. My doc put me on Transenamic acid at night and i was told to take 2 tablets up to three times a day if it got bad. Touch wood i havent coughed any up for 3wks but it is a major problem for me. I like to go out clubbing and stuff and lately have been scared incase i start coughing blood up in the middle of the dance floor! My nurse has suggested an operation that can be done to, i dont know block the vessel that keeps bursting but i think this is a last attempt option?
Does anyone know what brings it on because one night i was asleep and i woke up coughing blood up... So its not as if i am doing something active that may aggitate the blood vessel
If anyone else is in the same boat or has any suggestions i would be greatfull to know

-x-

I know this is reallllly late to reply, but I figured I'd give it a go anyway, since I recently coughed up A LOT of blood (to me anyway). I have been sick since Tues (12/7) and on Thurs (12/9) I went to lay down to go to sleep, and I felt this sudden surge of mucus (or what I thought was mucus) rushing to my throat. I had had this feeling once before so I ran to the bathroom to check it out. I was coughing and spitting out blood for a good 5 minutes. Afterwards, I was soo scared, cuz I coughed up so much I probably could've filled half, if not way more, of a dixie bathroom cup. I called my mom and we decided we'd call the doctor the next day. I did this and after a few call backs, my doc. put me on Cipro and Prednizone. I have been on these meds plenty times before, but not for coughing up blood. I was told that coughing up blood means there is almost a definite infection in the lungs. I have not coughed up anything since that night, let alone 10 minutes after the fact. It kinda just disappeared. I thought it could have been from such violent coughing just from being sick, but it was probably a combination of being sick and having an actual lung infection. There are other reasons for coughing up blood, and you can find them out anywhere on the internet. I know laying almost vertically flat on the bed can cause it to happen more often, so try to sit up more when you go to sleep. The best thing to do though is to call your dr. ASAP, if you have not already...which hopefully you did because this is an older post. I hope this helps out some though <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
