coughing up blood

There is something about the sight of blood when you spit that makes all my spidey senses fire up and my intital instinct is to run in circles screaming "I'm dying! Call an ambulance, call a priest, call the shoe dept and give them my regards" I mean coughing up blood is just WRONG....but then I give myself the old "snap out of it" (a la Cher) and run down all the reasons this happens and why it's not a real big deal and that I should just keep my cool and keep an eye on it.

I wouldn't quit doing the HTS or anything else. Particularly since you are pretty sure you have a sinus infection going on. To me this seems like a time you want to be very sure to be moving that excess mucus out. And I must view a little blood in the mucus way different than everyone else? I mean while I think it's worth mentioning to the Dr. I don't think it's stop the presses interesting or certainly anything to stop your treatments over. Coughing up straight blood, or having an active bleed going is to me an entirely different thing than just blood in the mucus. And there's no mistaking one for the other, when your lungs are actively bleeding you know it.

It sounds to me like you have pretty much figured out why there's probably some blood in your sputum and yah I would tell your Dr. but like I said I wouldn't quit doing your stuff.

Sorry, this was a rambler <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

What do I do?

</end quote></div>

You need to call the doctor. And if the bleeding continues, you need to go to the hospital.

It sounds like you have an infection that needs to be treated.

Unfortunately it's not about what you want, but rather what your body needs.

Wow we are in same boat today, I just did too-ugh.

ANyway since this is new to you I woudl call right away, if you havent already then first thing this morning. It at least warrants a clinic visit and abx imo (also dont do pulmozyme, HS, CPT for 24 hours).

Now that I know what I am like whith bleeding I know I dont have to call because mine hasnt been full on blood greater than 2 tsp yet but it is getting there so I am reducing activity until clinci opens up and calling then. It is sad but the more it happens the better idea you get of what to do so since its yoru first time more precaution is better IMO.

Given that it isnt a normal occurence for you and that you had problems that you were trying to take care of before the blood showed up, I would contact your doctor. I dont always rush to call the doctor when I have my bleeds, but I have had them as long as I have been dx with CF so I know the difference to worry pretty much. Although its not "normal", it is "common" & not just with CF patients. Anyone that has a respiratory issue can have hemoptysis even a mild case of pneumonia in a normally healthy patient. Each body is different, but obviouslly with CF there are many factors that can contribute so dont freak, but dont take it too lightly. Let us know what happens!
