Coughing up ick

My friend just called and is frantic. I wondered if some of you could let me know (to tell her) what might be going on. Her 12 month old son w/CF coughed up a large "sheet" of green slimey mucous. She said it was very large for his 18lb body, like the size of an adult's fist. She also said it was very thick, like egg yolk and she had trouble cleaning it up after he spit it out. Her CF nurse just said, "I don't want to alarm you, but this is NOT good." She is supposed to be at the CF clinic in about 3 hours for an appointment, but in the meantime, she wondered what everyone thought. Any ideas?? <br>

Just a note: He was diagnosed about 6 months ago because of pancreatic insufficiency, he does have some lung involvement already but has never coughed up anything like this before.

Green mucus usually indicates some type of infection. They will probably try to do a culture to see if he is growing any bugs. Keep us posted! I hope everything is ok.

Depending on what meds they have him on things might finally be loosening up so they will come up. The color is a concern and I am glad she has an appt at the clinic! Let us know what is said...
