Coughing

I was curious at what age is "normal" to start coughing?? I know this sounds like a silly question but our almost 10 month old never coughed until last week when our weather got really warm.
Should I be worried?? Are coughs a good thing??

Thank you

I don't really know, I'm sure it's probably different for everyone, depending on how severe their CF is, what they culture, what meds they do, etc. My 2 year old never really coughs either (no more than someone without CF), just the occasional cough when he is sick. Since your daughter just started when it got warm, I'd think maybe allergies? They can cause post nasal drip, which can cause coughing. Vinny has to take something for allergies in the summer, he coughs a lot and I catch him rubbing his nose and eyes alot.

Our little one has had a cough from the start. He has his "normal" cough but when he starts getting sick his cough increases as well as becomes junkier sounding. My son's pediatrician has us call immediately when his cough increases and gets us right in. We have recurring pneumonia so our situation may be a little different as they like to jump right on whatever it is causing the increase in cough. I do agree with the PP, sounds like it could possibly be allergies with the warm weather, but it never hurts to call your pediatrician!

And then there's the allergy time of year for people who don't even really have 'em bad! My voice has been scratchy while I still feel fine for weeks!

Good luck. Vigilance!

DS usually doesn't cough -- once in awhile he gets a post nasal drip sorta cough. His doctor wants us to call asap if he gets a cough and we've been told to "learn to know his cough".

When DS was 2 months old he'd cough so hard I'd have to hold him over the sink or he'd throw up his formula. Mentioned his cough to the doctor at his 2 month check up and he said it was normal "cfers cough" and besides his lungs were clear. Took him to a followup appointment in the city a few weeks later and his CF doctor yelled at us -- DS had bronchitis. Didn't we know he could end up back in the hospital?! So I learned to "know his cough" and not to bother calling the local cf/peds doctor.

Christina,

I asked our CF nurse this question and she said that at this young age the baseline is NO cough. ANY cough should be watched and dealt with if it lasts more than a few days.

She said the expectations for the cough and what is normal baseline will change as they get older, but for now, no cough is good.
