Cytotec (aka misoprostol) is a drug that is only approved by the FDA to treat ulcers. It also happens to be effective at ripening the cervix when it is inserted vaginally. And it is extremely cheap. The problem is that when things go wrong, they can go really wrong. Once it is inserted next to the cervix and it dissolves, it can't be removed. It can cause uterine hyperstimulation which can lead to complications like fetal distress, amniotic embolism, uterine rupture, fetal death and postpartum hemorrhage.

If one has to be induced, a better alternative is a prostaglandin like cervidil. Though it is a lot more expensive (should that really matter??), it can be removed if the baby isn't tolerating it. It also carries less risk.

There will be people who say that cytotec is fine and dandy but when it comes to my health and that of my baby's I'm going to choose the safer option when available.
