DD always catching something at preschool

Hi. We put DD in school in august. She has had 4 or 5 colds since then. One went to both of our chests (mildly, no bronchitis) but the others have been mild runny noses. So little sometimes that I wonder if it is even a cold (like now). She LOVES school. But, she is only almost 4 and isn't required to be there. It is only a 12 child class out of someone's home so the germ exposure is supposed to be minimal, but they are all always getting sick anyway.

Am I doing my daughter harm? Can these mild runny nose colds damage her? She has gotten over them in the 7-10 day timeframe without noticeable incident (except for the chest one which we did the preventative antibiotics for). We are so anal about keeping friends and family away if they have as much as a sniffle, but yet I send her to preschool where she will definitely be exposed to things and probably catch something.

Anyone have experience with this issue?

Thank you!

Hi,
My experience is similar - Joanna has had her 3 birthday a month ago
But my decisions where different.
Due to facts:
- one I'm having a second child in two - one weeks time - so I'll be at home = and I work at home - I'm an architect - most work I do on computer and my mom comes to help me everyday till 2 p.m. so I have time to go to clients till noon

The second fact is:
Joanna loves kids and would love to go to kindergarden but...
I talked to a mother of 5 kids - two girls with cf - one has passed away (at age 22) she rejected new lungs for the second time - and a second girl - now at age for school - 7 years old.
This mom is also the president of the Polish fund against Mucoviscidosis and has seen alot since then - both as a parent and as a person to whom many turn to for help.

She told me one thing about kindergarden - NO WAY!
She send her first girl and now she regrets it since it has propobly speeded up her cf - although - the girl didn't have much more then colds then also.... also - as healthy kids are not chequed for pseudomonas - some of the kids in the kindergarden had it and it came up after a time. But instead - she lets her girl (also a very curious child) go to additional gym classes - dancing, swimming and so on - but classes in small groups and in big rooms - not in school gyms but in clubs. Since her girl started school this year - at sign of first cold she went for teaching at home till the flue season will be over. Even when she is not sick.
She also told me to suplement her diet with omega3, mickroelement and probiotics - all the time - to ceep Joanna's immune system strong.
This seems to work for us. Jaonna has classes 3 times a week with other kids - and loves it - she caught one cold only from a boy at the gym class - but it turned out not harmfull at all. (Joanna has been going there since last year (sinxce she finished 2) and to swimming since she finished 9 months)
Most kids are healthy since these classes are additional to daycare and most parents don't send kids with running noses to this - as they usually do at daycare since they have to go to work.
After theses clases I sterilize Asia's hands with single use tissues and after then give her something to eat - it seems to work so far and Joanna is happy with being with other kids.

Maybe this will help - but remember - we live in a different country and many things here are different.

Years ago, when DS was a baby, we were told how many cold the average child gets each year and I was shocked. We were told that ds was going to get colds -- the key was to be proactive with cpt, etc. to keep it from getting worse.

With DS' daycare/preschool they were excellent about sanitizing surfaces and toys, letting us know what bugs were going around AND enforcing their sick policies. DS did fairly well.

Last year I got a little nervous about the start of kindergarten, especially with the H1N1 outbreaks. We did have in his 504 plan that they enforce their sick child policies. His teacher put a couple notes in the school newsletter about making sure parents keep their kids home if ill as there are a few children with health issues in which a normal illness can lead to something much much worse. This was after she was noticing and epidemic of children suddenly getting fevers around 12-1 when apparently the pain reliever their parents used wore off.

I do get a little nervous about gymnastics since I'm pretty sure they don't sanitize surfaces, the dreaded foam cube pit, but we use hand wipes immediately.

That's what I do after gymnastics - use hand wipes sanitazation at once. At first some parents where shocked - but they got used to it. And the gimnastics are not in school/kindergarden rooms or buildings.
As far as our daycare/kindergarden - the kids get sick all the time and no one cares for kids with health issues....(ofcourse they say otherwise) Some parents send kids on antibiotics and hope to get them home before teachers realize they have a sick kid around! But that's here.
When I saw my friends child lung x-ray - after a year of daycare ( two stays in hospital and about 5 antibiotics in less then 5 months time) i got scared and chose to keep mine at home as long as possible

I agree that it is confounding that we willingly send our kids to school where they are exposed to germs and yet we don't let sick people come to our house. However, here's my thought on it.... unless you find a big old bubble to permanently keep your CF kid in, they WILL be exposed to colds. Most basic viruses are contagious before symptoms kick in, so a trip to the playground, the grocery store, or a restaurant will all expose her as much as the preschool will. I speak to the parents at preschool about trying to keep their sick kids home, etc. And then I've given permission for my daughter to be purell'd regularly at school.

I don't allow sick people into my home and on the same token, I would take Alyssa home from school if I showed up and a kid was obviously sick. Otherwise, I have to grit my teeth and deal because I won't let CF win out and take away the normalcy of childhood that I can possibly give her.

I do agree also Heather- but since Joanna is smaller (2 years almost - a big difference at this age) I choose to keep her away from kindergarden for now. What will happen next year - I'm not sure....But instead I give her the gymnastics and swimming so she has contact - for now it seems enough.... but for how long...?
I also hope that with age - she gets stronger and that there will be a big difference in how 3 year olds play and 5 year olds

So sorry I am not the only one who struggles with this. It is driving us crazy! Her annual is in May. I will then know if her baseline has declined and will reevaulate then.
