Does Hypertonic Saline come in diffrent strengths? DD is going to start HTS. Her regular doctor prescribed 7% is this the right strength for a 5 year old that doesn't cough much so far and she's been pretty healthy so far. We talked with her regular doctor but forgot to ask about this.

I think 7% is what everyone uses. We used to mix a 10% with a 3% to get the 7% before it was available. If you have the option to do this your co pay may be lower, I think someone on the site recently suggested doing this to avoid the $50 co pay many insurance companies charge for this inexpensive drug. Otherwise you can just get the 7% vial which is easy to use.

My infant uses the 3%, but my 5 year old started right off with the 7% right away. They had to do her first dose at clinic cuz of some effect it can have? I can't remmeber exactly what it was, but she did fine with it. She has been on it since now for about 8-10 months. It can cause alot of coughing if there is mucous in there...when seh started it she was sick and it caused her to cough up alot of stuff...it was a good addition for her.

i don't know dosages, i do know that i asked my dr. about me starting it, since im seeing a bunch of people doing it...and so we're gonna "test" it my next appt in October, to see if i can handle it, and adjust it if needed. I hardly cough, unless i dont do my meds, so im curious to see what it does.

Emily will likely be starting it as well, and she will be trying it for the first time at her clinic visit too, after an albuterol treatment. She'll have pft's before and after. Brandi~ the problem it can cause is bronchospasm, esp in those with a strong asthma component to their cf. This is an issue for Emily, so I'm hoping she can handle it.

Yeah as far as I know 7% is the standard dose. Some insurance plans don't cover the 7% vials but will cover the 10% & either the .9% or 3% to mix together to get 7% since they are a cheaper/generic form. The 7% would be easiest, but I won't have a problem using 2 different vials if that's what we need to do to get coverage... our insurance covers everything else for her w/o an issue. A benefit to having two to mix would be the ability to dilute a bit if needed early on if the 7% was too strong.

DD started her Hypertonic Saline yesterday. She is not very happy with it. It makes her throat itch and she complains saying that is too salty. The first day she coughed some, the second day she coughed very little. She keeps taking it out of her mouth. We did albuterol before doing HTS. We did it early in the morning as soon as she got up. Most of the time she is very compliant and try to do what we ask her to do. This time she is fighting it. Maybe 7% is too strong. I called CF Center to tell them about this. Sometimes they take their time to call back. Like I said before your opinions are very important for me. Any suggestion is appreciated. Thanks
