To anyone who has gone through this: have you continued to have any allergic reactions?
My husband has gone through this twice. Two months ago, for meropenem. After the first (or maybe it was the 2nd) FULL dose, he developed a rash (the same symptom that freaked them out in April and made them insist on doing desensitization the next time he needed antibiotics). They said no one had ever gotten a rash after being desensitized, maybe it was the hospital laundry soap. At that time, mero was the only iv antibiotic they introduced at the hospital, then sent us home with cipro, too. (He had no other reactions).
Today/yesterday, they desensitized to meropenem, and soon after they gave him a full dose, they also added cipro at the hospital. Soon he broke out into a very hot, bad rash. Even though we kept telling them he got a rash two months ago with just meropenem after desensitization, they rolled their eyes and said, no, it's the cipro (which, it in fact could be, of course. Just wish they wouldn't have dismissed that it still could be the mero - that's why I'm asking if anyone has developed any allergic symptoms after going through desensitization.)
The irritation is that they made such a big deal when he originally got the rash, then after the whole big desensitization routine, he still ends up where he started - with a rash, and both times they've sent him home anyway. (First hospital bill for about a 60 hour stay was $15,000.) (I know an allergic reaction is a big deal, obviously).
We're home now (on mero and some other antibiotic - ceftazipime or something), I'll be sleeping with the epi pen close by. What fun!!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
Take care to all,
