Diabetes and CF

hello guys, I am a CFer who developed diabetes at 18, so i had to restrict my calorie intake horribly. The doc didn't give me insulin so i had to rely on pills and diet. It was the worst decision taken by a doc ever. I lost weight and infections took control over me. Now, i dont exceed 3000 calories a day and still my glucose levels are around 250's 2 hrs after meals and docs tell me to keep eating , should i start insulin and increase my calorie intake!

Pills do very little, if anything. You need insulin. You don't adjust your calorie intake, you adjust your insulin. Your doctor needs their head checked if they are telling you to not eat. Don't delay either, you'll only be hurting yourself. 250 is extremely high and those kind of numbers will send you in a downward spiral quick. Trust me on this one, good sugar levels will help everything; weight gain, fatigue, PFT's, infection, staying out of the hospital, etc. I'm sure the pills sound like a good idea, but they don't work. Don't be afraid of the needles, they are so tiny, you don't feel them in your arm. Tell your doctor that you need Humalog (fast acting) and maybe even Lantace (long lasting). Learn to carb count too. Carbs=Sugar. Learn to carb count and you can have all the carbs you want, and you'll gain weight. You'll be on the right track in no time and feeling a lot better and living a lot longer. And remember, don't adjust your eating (besides the basics, no soda, candy, etc...) adjust your insulin. I'm not a Dr., but I did stay a Holiday Inn last night.

Pills DO work...but only for certain people. I have had CF related diabetes now for over 5 years....I was on insulin for about 6 mos after diagnosis...then switched to the pills. And I have great control ...my last A1C was a 5.6%. My average blood sugars are between 100 and 130. But I agree...if you are on the pills and your blood sugars are still 250 and up...this is not good....and can do damage to your kidneys. Also I agree that you should NOT restrict your calorie intake. You can cut down on the sodas....none at all...or switch to diet...You have to learn to count carbs....once you get the hang of it ....is nothing. Good Luck and Take care....Dea

I can't believe your doc's advice! I'm on Humolog, it's a fast acting insulin. I only inject a few units with meals and it really helps. When your blood sugars are out of wack, you don't absorb much, and you are starving on the molecular level. To keep functioning, you body begins to break into it's stores (fat, muscles) and I'm guessing you don't have much. I would reccomend that you start seeing an Adult CF specialist if you don't already. They know more about CFRD, and should be able to come up with a treatment plan that works!Check out the Diet, NUtrition ost in the families folder.Debbie 22 yr old w/ CF
