Diabetes Frustration

I am eating good meals-- healthy carbs, proteins and fats. My doctor told me to eat a certain amount (45-60 grams of carbs) for meals and 15-30 for snacks.

I am struggling to make it from meal to meal.... blood sugars are falling down to 60-80's. I am quite active-- busy with housework, playing in the backyard with Kiddo and exercising. It doesn't seem that my carbs are enough to get me from meal to meal with my active lifestyle.

I am so tired with my sugars being so low. I feel like I dragging.

How many carbs are other CRFD's eating??? It is me or my carbs not high enough??

I have CFRD and I am constantly dealing with managing lows. My doc said to eat whatever I want cause us CF'rs need all the fat, carbs etc and then just give myself enough insulin to cover the meal or snack. So I do not eat a certain amount of carbs I just eat whatever and then take insulin. To help with lows it helps to eat small meals through out the day. But when I am exercising or know I will be I will eat some carbs or drink some juice prior to the exercise and then I bring juice, pretzels etc with me in case I drop low while exercising. For me it is a contstant struggle.

You are more likely to have lows when you use insulin. If you are getting lows it is because you are giving to much insulin for what you are eating. I would talk to your doc or you could take matters into your own hands and do one of two things. Eat more carbs like around 75/meal which is pretty normal or decrease your insulin intake just slightly and see if that doesn't help.

If you use insulin it should keep your sugars under control and stable it should not force you to have to eat every few hours. That is not the point of insulin.

As for your question about if your carbs are enough. I personally don't think so ANY time I have had a doc try to put me on a restricted carb count it has ALWAYS been 75 per meal and around 30-50 per snack dependent upon insulin and blood sugar status.

I've never been on carb restriction,I've just been told to eat what I normally do and then adjust my insulin for it. I eat a ton of carbs. Does your endocrinologist work with other CFers, or is at least in constant contact with your CF docs?

On another note, I find that if I don't take insulin I need to eat every hour - hour and a half, (or else I'll drop into the 40's quickly) but with insulin I can go for much longer, more normal periods of say 4 hours - and by then I'm just hungry.

I am also on the no carb restriction list too...my doc has always said eat what I want, cover with insulin if needed. I just wish that hospitals would get that message...everytime I am in, they always want to put me on a diabetic, low fat low carb diet...essentially a cardboard diet LOL. That is until I have a fit and my doc re writes my orders. But at home, I eat what I want.

I think I need a new Endocrinologist-- yes, she speciality is CF diabetes. Sad but true.

I am just going to eat.... until I am full like I was when they first diagnosed me with CFRD. I am afraid that I have been starving myself.

One thing that some diabetes doctors don't seem to understand is that for many of us, the insulin is being produced, but it is slow to enter our systems. So if you are taking enough fast/rapid acting insulin to cover your whole meal (especially if you are not eating many simple sugars, but complex carbohydrates, etc. that take a while to break down to sugars in your system), then you are going to go low, almost guarranteed. You may just need enough to cover any simple sugars you are having during the meal.

I take a combination fast and long acting insulin in the morning and usually don't need any more fast acting insulin during the day (the long acting "peaks" twice a day after the initial shot, so I do have to schedule my meals correctly). I always have to have my mid morning and mid afternoon snack, or I go low. And even though I am a "plump" cfer <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> , I have also never been told to restrict my carbs (I need them when I'm sick especially, just like any other cfer), but to compensate with my insulin for them- I have a regular fast insulin pen for those times.
