Diabetes testing?

I am just wondering are those of you with cf tested for diabetes yearly? They just started to do this at our local cf clinic this past year and the U of MN does a yearly testing starting at the age of 6 from what I understand.

My daughter had her first testing done last summer and it was a nightmare. The local folks just are not set up for this. I requested the U of MN protocol which they actually want blood drawn every 1/2 hr. which would have been about 6 times if I remember right. Well the local clinic here (the hospital wasn't able to do this) couldn't get a IV (I beleive that was what they were supposed to do?) started so they had to poke my daughter each time the blood was needed and then they didn't always get it on the first poke. I believe she ended up being poked about 11 times. So needless to say she does not want to go through with this testing ever again!

I will request that in the future this be done at the U of MN since they are so much more qualified to do it so it should be easier on her. But now I don't know how to convince her that this is something necessary. Or is it? Any help on this would be appreciated.

Thank you!

The hospital in Bismarck where the cf clinic is held monthly is the one that was not set up to do the diabetic testing by the U of MN protocol. They tried on another patient before my daughter was scheduled to go in and this little person ended up being admitted overnight - they had some problems not sure what exactly. So, that's when my daughter's doc said to bring her to the clinic and they would have a nurse there who would be able to start the IV - well the nurse wasn't able to start the IV which led to considerable amounts of pokes. Everyone at the clinic was really nice but nice doesn't cut it when you are the one being poked numerous times.

Yes, the glucose tolerance test at the U of MN clinic is done in the Masonic Day Hospital, and they set up an IV line. It's part of the annual studies, and so they also use the IV line to get all of the blood draws for the required tests done(vitamin levels, etc, etc). After that, there's a blood draw every half hour. It's nice to do at the day hospital, since they'll wheel in a TV/VCR and let you pick out a movie to watch while you have to sit around.

Are you already going to the U of MN clinic yearly? If so, I'd say have her do her annual studies when you go there.
