What is a usual age for diagnosis of cf? my lil man is being treated as asthma but doesnt fit into the usual, every time the symptoms flare up he gets a pale clay coloured poo,(sorry for that) It is usually brown but floaty and smelly. This is not usual for asthma, but happens with every flare up and on his last admission had sats of 90% they stayed there for a few weeks after was discharged at 92%. He has sob and coughs like always seems to have something in throat. He had a sweat test when he was little that was not diagnostic? what does that mean? can you get a false negative result? Are there other things that i should request. He also has clubbed fingers and toes are starting to go.

While most kids are diagnosed before age 3, but can be missed in diagnosis for years or even decades. Sweat tests -- especially on very little kiddos -- can be a bad diagnostic. My daughter had borderline sweat scores, but there are plenty of kids around here with sweat scores in the normal range that were later determined to have CF genetics.

I would request a genetic test that tests for all existing mutations (1500+). the symptoms you are describing do not fit asthma. Even though i really hope your child does not have CF, clubbing fingers and digestive issues should raise red flags since they are quite typical of CF.

And as Heather said, there many many members here on the forum who had completely normal sweat tests and were only diagnosed through genetic testing.

I am in agreement with tha above information.

I was dx at 47 years of age and I'm aware of a woman being dx at 73 years of age.

Good luck.

Hi. most asthma dignosed person here - turned out to be cf when genetic test started.
I hope this is not the case with you - but since you're having doubts - try to get a genetoc test. Some cf patients have normal sweat test results as written above.
