Dizzy Spells?

Has anyone w/ CF had frequent dizzy spells? I have CF and I've been getting a lot of dizzy spells over the past 2 months. Since I've been paying more attention to it, I've noticed that it happens after I eat. Sometimes it's accompanied w/ nausea, sometimes my whole equilibrium feels off and I can't focus at work. My doctor has me scheduled for a glucose tolerance test, but whenever my glucose has been tested in the past, it's always been normal. Can anyone relate?

Hello Dawn,
I was diagnosed with diabetes recently, my sister who also had CF told me not to rely on just the basic blood test for diabetes as it is unfortunately, not always accurate. The more precise test is what your Doctor has reccommended, the glucose tolerant test{GTT] Good luck. {no pain involved!!}
I get a little heady when my levels are askew!!

I often have dizzy spells but I have been told it is related to a medicine I am on for esophageal varices and my liver--So I think its probably a different issue for me. But I know how you feel....its not fun!

I suffered strange dizzy spells about a week after finishing IVs. I had been on gentamycin for the first time (usually am on Tobramycin). Was eventually sent for hearing and balance tests and my ears were fine but the consultant said it was likely that the IV had caused it and I was lucky it didn't permanently damage my ear.

I agree you should see about being tested for diabetes. After you eat your blood sugar rises and that could be causing you the dizziness especially if you just ate something high in sugar!(natural or artifical)
Good luck

Hi All

I too have felt this way. I have gone through many tests. I was sure it was diabetes but the test (I have had many) always proved negative. I am told that Diabetes is quite hard to spot in CF as it has its own type, and the standard blood test doesn't necessarily pick it up. The type of tests I have are glucose tolerance type tests. You drink a known amount of sugar then have 6 blood samples taken over half hour periods to see how you are absorbing the sugar. However still nothing identified in me.

However I believe that my problems are not sugar based but blood pressure based. For years I have recorded low blood pressure values. It seems that this is caused in me but dehydration. I now make an effort to drink 3 litres of water a day and this has definitely helped. Dehydration is a general problem with CF and keeping well hydrated helps with the lungs to. When you eat blood is redirect from your body to the digestive symptom. It could be that it is this effect that is causing your dizzy spells as I think it was with mine.

Regards

Jon
