Josh is having an awful time with insomnia. We haven't used any prescription med yet. Someone recommended melatonin but we weren't sure of the dosage. He's 17, 5' 5" about 105 pounds.

ANy suggestions would be great. Thanks

I have used Melatonin a few times and so has my boyfriend. It works great! My CF doctor even said it was ok to use. The bottle says to take 1 tablet which is 3mg but I only take a fourth of that and it still works great! So I'd start out with a fourth first to see if that works. It takes at least 30 min.s to work.

Austin has been taking melatonin for a few years now. since he has started school. Otherwise he will stay up all night.

I only give it to him on school nights or if he has to get up early for something. He takes 3 mg. And usually within the hour he is asleep.

I have given it to Kaydan who is 3 . I gave him the same amount and alot of times it does nothing for him and then other times he will get sleepy within the hour or two.

Everyone is different.

Before starting this I asked the peds Doctor and the CF doctor. The melatonin is what they suggested. The Cf Dr. said his wife gives it to there son.

I usually get the melatonin at the GNC Clinic. It is a disolvable one (cherry flavor). They are 1 mgs. I have bought the Melatonin from Walmart too but it was a 3mg tablet to swallow. He likes the other better.

We use it for several of our kids at different points. Normally a 3mg dose will do the trick.

It is possible to 'ignore' it and stay awake: ie if tomorrow is a birthday don't put your hopes in it, but it works by convincing your body it is time to sleep so it is normally very effective.
