doc is leaving

I just received notice today that my local CF doc is leaving. I am just crushed and could not hold back the tears....I don't know how to do this one. I have been with him for about 3 years and he is the ONLY doctor who has ever bothered to educate me and get me going in the right direction. He answers all of my questions and he just cares....he just does.

He is a ped pulm and I just have never even seen the new adult pulm. they brought in a year or so ago. My doc was just good with me and the new adult guy has very little experience. I have a big center that I travel to and I am good with them and comfortable with them; but, i need something local to fill in the gaps and help here at home. This is so hard and I am so uncomfortable going to someone with such little CF experience.

Please tell me that it will be OK and that I may see a fresh perspective or that new docs aren't all that bad. I am just in tears over this<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"><img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

Your new doc might be relatively inexperienced with CF care, however the same cannot be said for you. You have been living with CF all your life, which means you are probably very educated about CF and how your own body responds to different treatments. Most adult CF docs know this and are more than happy to take your input very seriously.

I wouldn't worry about it. If at some point you think something is amiss in your treatment plan ask your doc for clarification, then make suggestions as necessary citing previous experiences (which he can then refer to in your chart).

Skye,

When my great insurance changed to not so great insurance -- I couldn't see my doctor for two years. Like you, I was extremely upset. The first doctor I got was so brand new, he wasn't even listed on the AMA website. But he was so openminded, he said he wanted to learn from ME. He was sweet, out of relief I started to cry -- so I know exactly how you feel. He was willing to call my old doctor and find out how she treated me. Then I had to switch to another doctor, an older traditional doctor who was very cold, but after seeing him a few times, he warmed up and was willing to work with me. It was two years before I could go back to my doctor, but I actually did very well. As long as you know how you want to be treated, open a dialogue with the new doctor and you'll see, most people will respond.

And you may get lucky and get someone fantastic. Just try to think, in the long run, things work out for the better.
