Does he really need enzymes?

My son is 9 months old. He has been on enzymes since he was 3 weeks old. He has always taken 1 ultrase before meals. Other than reflux, he has never had any issues at all and shows no signs of CF yet. He has always been 90th percentile + in weight and height. They did a stool sample at 3 weeks and I was told his pancreatic enzymes were a little low, so they put him on enzymes. However, his stool has been stinky, but never been strange. it has never been greasy. I notice he strains a lot and sometimes nothing is produced. Sometimes, it is pellets. I am concerned that he doesn't even need them. I know that is rare. I am keeping detailed records on him right now and plan to ask at his clinic visit next month, but I thought I would ask here too. Sometimes i only give him 1/2 an enzyme if it has been recent since he had the last one. I also have been nursing him at night with no enzymes since he was very young, with no complications. I posted this on another website and someone mentioned having him retested to see if he is pancreatic sufficient now. Can that be possible? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!!!

As for nursing without giving him enzymes, I've been told that breast milk is such a basic compound and is so easily broken down that most of the time there isn't a whole lot of need for enzymes unless extremely pancreatic insufficient.

Based on what you've said, I would have him retested for pancreatic sufficiency. I think it's rare that a person DDf508 is pancreatic sufficient... so I'm interested to hear if he is.

I would say retesting could be a good idea. My dd had a very low elastase level when born (60 I think, highly insufficient) and was put on enzymes b/c of that. When retested a year later she had 450 (I think a person w/o CF has >500 and PS is >200). Someone on this website mentioned that little ones pancreatic status can flip before stabilizing.

Thanks guys. That would be awesome if he did not need them at all. I did not know it could change. I will definitely have them check next week!
