Does this happen to your child

It seems like whenever she finishes her antibiotics; then next day she gets yet another cold. We went to her CF appointment last week; had 2 days left of her hard core anti. Her PFT's were great. Lungs clear. Fabulous. Picked up a nasal cold at school. :(....Really?

She has 2 days of school left.... Come on... Hoping she can pull through this one without going right back to the doctor.

This has happened multiple times with my daughter. She started kindergarten this year so I was prepared, at least in theory, for colds but it did seem every time I thought we were making progress her nose would start running. I have attributed some of that to the region we live in, but some also comes from her classmates. I've spent a great deal of time teaching her how to cough and sneeze, but unfortunately that is not high on the priority list for non-CF parents. My daughter has seven days (4 whole, 3 half), with a kindergarten graduation and a birthday party (her's) taking place within those 7 days. I just want her to have the ability to enjoy all the same things that the other kids get to experience. She has her yearly appointment three days after school ends, we'll bide our time until then. Best of luck to your daughter. Enjoy the summer!!!:)

I don't think it's anybody's imagination. I am thinking back to the twenty some years I was living on antibiotics and every kid, including me, was a germ bag. It may have no correlation but we often are infected first by a virus before a bacterial infection takes hold. Antibiotics shouldn't impact immunity to fight other bacteria, however viruses are mortal enemies with bacteria and much of our bacterial conscripts aid to kill viruses that are pathogenic.

The course of antibiotics may kill off beneficial bacteria in the gut as well as every mucus membrane so ravaged by the infection antibiotics were given to eliminate. The antibiotic course was right to take as the bacteria was or would damage and scar the lungs or upper respiratory system. It is another good reason to consider allowing some infections to run their course when you, child and doctor think it's best.

This may be poor therapy for a kid but I take Zovirax often after a long course of antibiotics. In my case a common virus responsible for cold sores, herpes simplex, is pearled into my liver so I need no exposure, just an opportune environment. If a child can fight off even a few infections without antibiotics, it will potentiate into a more robust immunity. It's a thought.

Sam has done this and it turned out to be sinus problems. They can be helped with sinus rinses and surgery. Hopefully the sinus rinses will help him not to have to have too many surgeries in the future. His nose always runs clear - like a cold - because the green gunk is stuck in his head, too thick too move. So, people thought he just had a cold and wasn't really sick. You might ask your CF doctor to refer you to a pediatric ENT who has some experience with CF patients. Good luck, rosesixtyfive, mother of Sam, 3 years old, ddf508
