Does your child cough dirung or shortly after CPT.

Hey all,

It was mentioned to me a few months back, that when you do cpt on your baby/child they should cough (during/after) CPT.
That is if they have mucus build up and they need to cough it up.

I was wondering if any of your children do, as my daughter is now 18 months old and rarely coughs during/after her CPT.
Is this normal? i'm just curiouse.
Does it mean she has no mucucs to cough up?

Give me your thoughts, on this.

My son is 3 now, but up through 18 months he never coughed at all during CPT. He uses the vest now and at the moment is having allergies and on tobi for pseudomonas and has maybe one or two loose coughs at vest time.

My son is 2 years old. He rarely coughs on his own during cpt but after we finish cpt I tell him to cough and he does if he needs to or not. Sometimes it sounds as if he gets something up but most of the time it sounds dry. I just tell him to cough just in case!

My 2 1/2 yro daughter never seems to cough much except when her allergies are acting up. Even then, the CPT doesn't seem to increase the coughing much.

Our son usually doesn't cough. So when he does cough, it usually means he's coming down with a cold or something. Sometimes it's post nasal drip or if he swallows wrong, last spring a head cold did develop into a upper respiratory bug. Drives me nuts when I take him to the local CF clinic when he's sick 'cuz they just tell me "he has CF, that's what they do, they cough". Like banging my head against the wall trying to explain that coughing isn't the norm for him.

When I was getting physio done in hospital last month, I was told by my physio guy who also does physio on kids, that many CFers sometimes do not cough until about a half hour after physio, once everything has been loosened. Some CFers do not necessarily cough during or right after physio. In my case, when I was younger and really sick I would cough during and right after, but if I wasn't battlleing an infection, then I wouldn't cough for about 20-30 mins afterwards, or usually not at all.

Thanks everyone for your replies. It realy helps knowing that i'm not the only one, well i guess its good thing that our chidren are not coughing during there CPT.

When I do chest PT for Mike, I feel like I'm not doing a good job if he doesn't cough. He assures me that whether he coughs or not, it makes him feel much better to have that stuff loosened up. So even if they don't cough, I'm sure it makes your little ones feel good!!
(Plus since they are still little and their lungs are doing okay, the cilia can carry some of that junk up, even without the coughing... I think)

Eli--thanks for your question 'cause I was wondering about that too. My granddaughter doesn't cough much either, but she seems to have a runny nose alot. Is this normal anyone? Also, do you use nebs with your CPT? We have the vest and we don't use nebs--was wondering if it would help loosen up the stuff better.

Unless I am actually sick I dont cough much during cpt even with nebs. The "RULE" for years with our therapists was to try a huff/cough 5 times after each position (if doing manual). The idea was to get/keep things moving, but over the years I have found that forcing it would close my airways up. The "newer" rule is to try it 1/2 times & if you feel something moving, but its stuck to breath easy & try again. If nothing is moving then go onto the next position. Of course this is much easier when the CFer is older & knows the feelings of mucuous moving etc. The idea is tho that not all CFers cough during cpt. Depending on my health overall depends on if I cough later or not also!

My daughter (17 years old) does both the vest and nebs ~ sometimes she does them separately, sometimes she does them at the same time ~ I think it is mostly depends on how pressed for time she is and/or what else she is trying to accomplish at the same time ~ if she is sitting at the computer working on something she may want to only do the neb, but if she is watching a movie on TV and wants to get both things done (so we don't have to keep the volume up for so long) she will do both at the same time.

I have seen her doing her <b>nebs, vest, on-line chat, homework & listening to music in her headphones all at the same time</b> ~ that is some serious multi-tasking

Oh, and for the original question ~ no she doesn't always cough when doing CPT ~ only when she has a current infection and has more junk than usual.

Our son rarely coughs unless he's coming down with something. Weird thing is that until he got a head cold last April, he never ever had a runny nose. I commented to my husband this past winter that I've never ever noticed DS having a runny nose, wondering if it was a cf thing and he just had extra sticky boogers. Also, Mike doesn't cough at all when using the vest even if he cranks it all the way up. He doesn't feel like it does anything, so he only uses it if no one is around to do manual.
