I was watching a video on CF and a doctor stated that when someone with CF gets a double lung tansplant, their new lungs will not get CF...I don't see how exactly that would work because wouldnt their new lungs still eventually fill with thick sticky mucus that their bodys produce?

The new lungs wont have the "CF DNA" already in them which causes the thick mucous

Still confusing to me, so is mucus only produced in the lungs? I would think if its also produced in the sinus and other areas, that the mucus could drain down into the lungs over time.

It's a basic defect in the CF lung cells that cause the mucus to buildup there. Without the defect, you don't have the mucus problem. (A drastic over simplification, but...)

Yes, sinus problems will still occur, (assuming they were problems before the transplant) but even if mucus got into the new "normal" lungs, they would be able to handle it in a normal way, just clear it out like any other person without CF.

I think its a little bit more complicated than that; however, you still need to remember that any person is has a transplant will be on anti-rejection medication too.

Ya, i guess I see where you are coming from, it would be the same thing as if someone without CF somehow got CF mucus in their lungs, it might make them sick but wouldnt give them CF.
