no, not a lazy nurse. i ran it by my doctor and specially requested it--the orders are written for the draws to be that way.

The one and only time that I've had a picc, the nurses could never get blood out of it. But the way you describe it sounds correct. That's the way the nurses always told me how it should work.

I've been in some hospitals and had some home health companies that don't use blood from the PICC for anything. And some that use it for everything! I think the jury is out on this one.
But yeah, if they do take peak and trough they always do a throwaway vial of blood.

I just wanted to say that one of the benefits of a PICC is not only that it saves the vein from blowing due to meds but that you ARE able to draw blood from it. The only problem with clotting comes when/if you draw blood through the line and do not flush the line clear when you are done. You have to flush the line with saline and heparin when they are through with the blood draw, so that it does NOT clot.

Just wanted to put that out there for those that didn't think you were supposed to draw blood through the line. As long as it is done properly it is not a problem.

My docs will not allow me to draw my peak out of the picc or now my port. I have had a double lumen picc and then I would use one for blood draws and the other for meds. They always flush with 10cc of saline and then draw and discard 10cc then draw the right amount of blood.
