Dread going to the dentist

Does anybody else dread going to the dentist, besides for the usual reasons? All I could think about today while they were cleaning my teeth is when was the next time I could cough. I hate that they lay you down flat, that makes me cough as it is. Then, they hold your mouth open for long periods of time and spray water at your throat. <img src="i/expressions/coughing.gif" border="0">

I was thinking that eventually I might avoid the dentist, because of the coughing. I don't want it to get to the point, though. Does anyone else either avoid the dentist or dread it because of coughing?

Jeana,

Very interesting. I've never given this much thought, but do know that when I'm at the dentist, I find every possible opportunity to cough when they're NOT in my mouth. For example, when they re-fill the polishing tool or reach for the water, etc. I try to get in some good coughs at that time and they usually just wait for me to finish. The crappy part is if I have polish, etc. on my teeth so its hard not to swallow that. I agree, its a pain going to the dentist and having to worry about this. Just one more way CF affects us that most people would never even think of....

Perhaps you could suggest they do your teeth at more of a sitting position? Its probably not as easy for them, but will still get you the benefit versus cutting out the dentist altogether. If mine ever gets to the point I'm afraid of a coughing attack cause they have me too far back, I will ask them to sit me straighter and just "do their best".

I dont go to the dentist often (ok never as an adult except to have teeth pulled & once when I thought I might actually do some work so I had xrays done), but whether it be the dentist or an ENT.....

I make sure they know that I am prone to coughing & I cant hold it so they really work with me. Obviously if I am "sick" & will cough harder/longer then usual I dont go because they can only with we me so much before it stops them from doing there job.

Another thought tho I hate to suggest it, but sometime you must do it is to use a cough suppresent.....this is IMHO only for extreme cases & after talking/working/trying just warning the dentist etc. &/or trying the sitting position etc as Sonia said.

My dentist elevates the back of the chair a bit so I am not flat on my back. If I do begin to cough they stop what they are doing and let me finish. There is a spit sink next to the chair, but the problem is when the side of your face is numb trying to spit out anything that comes up, lol. The only thing that pisses me off about the dentist anymore, other than the drill, is the fact that they will not give me the gas, and my friends say I am missing out. It's probably better for my lungs that they dont but I wanna laugh like an idiot for no reason. Sound fun!
