dry cough

Okay, my 3 yr old has had a very persistent dry cough for over a month now. Xrays and throat culture were fine. We tried Augmenten for 3 wks just in case it was an infection and this didn't help at all. Then we tried oral prednisone for 5 days just in case it was asthma and this didn't help either. Could it be allergies? Does it sound like anything else? We are going to clinic on Tuesday and they mentioned a CT scan of her sinuses or allergy testing. I just want an answer so we can control this aggravating cough.

Thanks

Do you notice that she is retracting a lot when she breathes? Do you see a little "hole" appear at the base of her throat when she inhales and exhales? Or in her rib cage? That could indicate that she is really working it to breathe.

I also try to listen with a stethoscope for wheezing. It sounds like a high pitched whistle usually at the end of exhalation. My oldest daughter (no CF) has asthma and develops a frequent dry cough and repeated sneezing when an asthma attack is brewing.

My middle daughter (again, no CF) has sinus issues, but that is usually a cough in the morning and is more of a wet cough.

Could it be a reaction to one of her inhalation meds?

Allergies could be the culprit, but when the dry cough kicks in, that usually indicates an asthma flare-up which the prednisone should have helped. I would really check for the wheezing and/or retracting.

Good luck and I hope she feels better soon,

Maria (mother of three daughters, the youngest, Samantha w/cf)

My 4 year old with CF has a very dry cough as well. It is very aggravating. It is so harsh and dry sounding that it has to hurt his throat. He started with a runny nose, then yesterday morning at 6:00 a.m. he had what we call a breathing spell, he has done this about 9 times. It is scary because he can't breath and his chest retracts big time and he panics and it makes it worse, he has turned blue already from it. It is so scary, we had to 3 times take him to the emergency room, we now have a medicine called Rinepinephrine and it seems to work in a few minutes. But yesterday morning we then had to take him to the bathroom and turn on the shower and leave the hot water run, then he was better, but still has that dry cough. Anyone else have this problem. What about the breathing spell, could that be asthma????? I called the doctor about the dry cough today and they didn't think it was an infection because his nose runs clear. We live 2 hours from his CF doctor and they usually have us come in for everything but today I wasn't able to do that. Just let me know if anyone has any thoughts.

Thanks

Angie

I just took my daughter to clinic because she has a dry croopy cough, i thought for sure she was getting sick again but her PFT's were 114 and her culture came back fine, the docs seem to think that maybe just allergies. I pray!!!

Whenever my daughter has the dreaded dry cough it is usually her sinuses flairing up and effects of post-nasal drip.

Hi. I'm the original poster. My daughter saw her doctor yesterday and she thinks it is post nasal drip. She's scheduled for a CT scan next week of her sinuses. Her pfts were great and lungs sounded fine. Thanks for all your replies.
