Maggie woke up last night screaming her right ear hurt her; screaming in pain. She has had a slight runny nose for at least 2 weeks, no significant cough..Course she always gets sick on the weekend. Anyway, not sure if her pediatrician office open this am. Her temp was also 101 last night. Plan on calling if md office if it is closed I guess I 'll have to take her to our ER(yuk). She doesn't have a temp this morning; but I gave her tylenol and her ear is feeling better. She takes prophylatic Bactrim but I guess she could still have an ear infection eve on daily Bactrim? Arg.

Ear Infection?

When my kids were little, they had a lot of ear infections. One doctor recommended putting peroxide in the ear. My oldest was a baby (less than a year old) and he screamed, so I didn't do it again. I also didn't understand what the peroxide was supposed to do or why my child was screaming. Years later, I did begin putting diluted peroxide (or diet tonic water mixed with peroxide) in my own ears and began using it with my sons at the first sign of an ear ache. I found we could often avoid a trip to the doctor altogether. If the ear is infected, peroxide will bubble a lot and it can be very uncomfortable, even painful. If the ear is already painful, I might start with diet tonic water and then try diluted peroxide afterwards, to try to avoid the discomfort peroxide can cause in a very infected ear.

Also: A topical heat treatment might be a more comfortable way to start killing off the infection. Hot water bottle, heating bad, hot shower...whatever she is most comfortable with and/or you have conveniently on hand.

Augmentin was the only thing that worked for DS' ear infections and he managed to get them even when he was on keflex.

Ear Infection?

I was able to get an appointment this morning with Maggie's usual pediatrician, in the office. She does have ear infections in both ears; her right ear was pretty bad I guess. So, he put her on high dose amoxicillen and a little augmentin at night; so she doesn't get too much diahrea. Hopefully it'll work. Dosed her up on Motrin. Course we are supposed to have company tomorrow. I was relieved I didn't have to take her to the ER. Fortunately, he also got the med in pill form; so much easier for her to take than liquid.
