Hello, I have been told by a few people in my area that my son (4 months old) would qualify for early intervention services with a DX of CF? We live in Massachusetts. I was just curious if anyone out there would have any advice regarding this. Thanks..

Hi - we live in nj and my son qualified because of low muscle tone and developmental delays. He got physical therapy/occupational therapy services. It was very helpful. Hope this helps. Jo Ann

Hi - I may be mistaken, but as an elementary teacher, I believe early intervention services are for children with developmental delays, speech problems, mental/physical handicaps. CF does not cause any of these problems so I don't know how that would qualify. I do know that once CF children are of school age they can seek a 504 plan. Items addressed in the plan can include enzyme distribution, later start time due to morning therapy, bus service, tutoring during/after hospital stays etc.

I am not sure if this plan is called 504 in every state, but I'm sure every state has a similar plan. Speak to your local public school.
Good luck!

Contact the hospitals social worker. When my daughter was born the social worker told us about a program like that. In Michigan it's called Early On. About every 3 months a nurse comes to our house and just makes sure our daughter is developing appropriately. If she ever had a delay and needed speech of phyical therapy they would help. I think CF qualifies because so many kids are hospitalized at an early age. Also contact the health department.

Hi, I too live in Massachusettes. I dont remember being involved in any early intervention programs, but that was 26 yrs ago so alot has changed. Definately the best way to find out would be to go to your CF centers social worker, I always found mine to be extremely helpful with lots of stuff. Good luck!

Hello,

I just wanted you all to know that a diagnosis of CF does qualify a family for early intervention services in the state of MA. I am not sure if each state has it's own criteria. My son will have his assessment next week. Just something else to consider. Every little bit helps!
