Easy question - I think

They are pieces of mucous (sometimes hard & small, but not necessarily) that have been sitting for a bit. They could be sitting because its just in a hard area to move it like small airways or you have much congestion & it is like the first "layer" of mucous so until you get thru the others you cant reach that one. I hope that explains it better! Kind of like layers of paint....the last layer against the actual wall is always hardest to remove...one reason is it has been sitting there the longest, another reason is that the other layers have helped "glue" it to the wall & quite often U find an unexpected thing when U get to the last layer!

Pretty much exactly the way Melissa described it (great analogy, by the way ^_^) They're hard and icky, and usually a nasty color like greenish-grey. I don't get them that much, but when I do cough one up it's usually first thing in the morning. I've had a few in my sinuses, too.

LOL the mucus plug I thought of was the one you loose prior to going into labor and giving birth...
Thanks for the info on the other kind.

Yeah I didn't want to be nasty, but I have coughed up what looks like boogers and was wondering if that was the same thing. No I didn't snort my nose then cough, this was a morning DEEP cough, from way down.
