Eating Disorder

One of my girls has been having some emotional problems over the past several months. I have placed her into therapy when I discovered enzymes on the floor, and hidden under her plate after dinner. She may be only 10, but she is aware enough to know that the enzymes is what helps her to gain weight. Her counsler has told me that my daughter feels in order to be popular you must be thin. Also at her last CF appointment a college intern was doing a survery. One of the questions was do you feel like you are to thin, her reply was never. She is currently wearing an 8 slim in pants. Needless to say I am heartbroken about this situation and I am at a loss as to what to do for her. She is currently doing counsling once a week, and I am tryin to focus the enzymes on making her strong rather than gaining weight. Any advice would be greatly apprecitaed.

I really feel for you. Having 2 teenagers, I have known many girls with eating disorders. Therapy is so important; you are really smart to insist on that. I think that having cf can make a child so conscious of eating, eliminating, etc. Add to that this culture of thinness that we live in and our daughters are at risk. I have a feeling eating disorders and cf are not uncommon--someone has written about it in the section about women--you might want to see if you can find it and email her directly.

i think it's good that you're able to "catch" it early - less damage will be done to her health. you should really monitor her closely about her food and enzyme intake, because malnutrition and being underweight in CF is an open door for a whole lot of trouble.i speak from experience here - i'm 21, female with CF, and have been anorexic for 2 years now. a lot of damage have been done to my lungs, dygestive system and liver, some are irreversible. i nearly died two times. i'm currently in recovery, again.
