emotions and weight

Hi all, When ever I get really upset, like heartbroken, the first thing to go is my appetite. I am so mad right now because I worked really hard to put on 11 pounds (thanks to Prednisone) in the past 3 weeks and because of "some wonderful guy" I lost 5 of those pounds in the past two days. I look at food and just want to puke.

What do you do when this happens? Even my favorite foods sound revolting. Is there any thing that can help? I really don't want to do the Prednisone thing again just to get an appetite back.

I've never had any weight problems so I'm not too much help here. I have certainly had nausea problems though (from meds, sadness, other things) so maybe I can help with that.

When "nothing sounds good" what I do is get out a bunch of fast food and restaurant menus and look over my favorite things. A lot of them still don't sound good, but looking at my favorite stuff will generally make me a little hungry, and chances are I'll find that ONE weird thing that sounds good. Then, you have to be quick - go get that food! Think of it as treating yourself to something you like, and doing your weight a favor. Even if that restaurant is across town, go there and get whatever you want. Order soup/salad too if that sounds good, then you'll have some of your meal to take home for later. (though that sometimes backfires and you might not want it later)

Another idea is to have a friend cook for you. You get to hang out, talk, bond, etc and you can help them chop ingredients. You forget what you are doing then, hey, suddenly you have this nice meal in front of you. Share it with your friend and concentrate on talking more than the food.

Last ditch effort: Get lots of boost or ensure and chug that stuff like crazy. You'd probably want the diabetic version, but they have a ton of calories in only 8oz. Also lots of other goodies like fats and protein. If you can stomach it, boost/ensure also make excellent smoothie and milkshake bases. Toss in some fruit for a powerful smoothie, or some ice cream (and bailiey's or kahlua >_>) for a delicious milkshake... that has hundreds of calories.

I'm sorry you feel so bad, I wish I could help. I'd make you dinner. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Oh, alternate idea... there are other drugs you can take for appetite aside from prednisone. Marinol, megace, some others (this is not really my area of knowledge)

Hello - It sucks having a low appetite, losing weight and still needing to eat! I don't have any tricks either, other than try ensure plus to get some easy extra calories on. If you're up for it maybe exercise to try and increase appetite.

Sorry about the 'guy'!
