Enzyme question

Hello everyone. I'm hoping that someone can answer my question. . . Parker takes 1/2 a capsule of Pancrease MT4 with every feeding. We normally just take out 7 of the tiny ball looking things and leave the rest in and close the capsule and use the rest the next time. I know that these things are pretty touchy, but could I save the other half for more than a few hours inside the capsule? I would imagine I could, but don't really want to put my child's growth in jeopardy by doing it. The thing is, that I hate these pills! I swear I've wasted almost as much as I've actually given to him by dropping them and dumping them over in the med cups. It happens mostly at night, so I was thinking of leaving the ones that have only half and using them at night, when it's harder for me to count and keep track of them.
Any help would be great!

I emptied them out ahead of time.

Others may tell you not to do this, but DS was on 1 1/2 pancrease MT4s, then 2 1/2 for a LONG time. We also had a 2 a.m. feeding, so yes -- I got a Sunday-Saturday pill dispenser and I divided the capsules up for individual feedings, so I wasn't messing around with emptying out capsules in the middle of the night, spilling them all over or wasting half capsules... I also did that for his daycare. They stayed dry in the containers, didn't change in consistency, nor did he have any bowel issues.

You can go to the "nutrition" section of the site and write to Axcan - a maker of pancreatic enzymes for CF patients.

They might be able to help you

Liza - did you do this like first thing every morning? You would imagine it would be fine. . . we're just counting on every ounce.
Good idea Amy! I will have to go do that!

I refilled the pillbox with enzyme beads every evening. I'd just pop one of the lids open and dump the contents onto a spoonful of babyfood bananas. I'm not a morning person, an not the most graceful person, so it just made life easier to do this than trying to empty/measure enzyme capsules while I was semi-awake.

We were trying to regain weight lost while he was in the NICU, so his doctors wanted us feeding him every 4 hours. Yawnnnn! We had the alarm set for 2 a.m. and would sleep feed him for months. He was a terrible eater (bottle drinker), and we got the most down him when he was sleepy/sleeping.
