Excercise and blood sugar

I went to the gym for the first time ever (think i'm still in shock) I need to get my lung function up its 52% at the minute.
I'm diabetic and i ate something before i went without insulin and found my levels were high after this. I took my long acting insulin as normal but found i woke up in the middle of the night with a hypo and my levels seem low today too.

Does anyone else find this after excercising and will i have to adjust my long acting insulin when i have been to the gym ?

Hi Julie, I'm wondering how long you exercised. Maybe you used up all your stored glucose in the liver by too much exercise. And the stored liver glucose would be what would have gotten you through the night. Was your bg high after the gym or after eating without the insulin?
I've had some baffling bg issues on days when I am excessively active too... no matter how accurate I am on checks, carb intake and insulin delivery.

Exercising makes my blood sugar go down. I have to make sure I am in the mid 100's before going and then when I am done I need to drink some juice. If I am working out REALLY hard like playing tennis, then I need to drink juice, eat raisens through out playing to keep blood sugar up. Everyone is different but I do not take insulin with food before working out, I just eat the food or drink and then let the exercise lower it naturally. You should not have to adjust the long lasting insulin cause from what my doc has told me the long lasting like Lantus is used to keep you even throughout 24hrs and should not make you have lows. But the short acting will make lows if taken too much or exercise. ALSO, exercise lasts in your body all day so you could get some lows way later after you have exercised because that is how physical activity affects diabetes. I have found sometimes I am lower at night than usual cause I exercised that morning or afternoon. But everyday is different for me. I also take the long lasting before bed so if you take it in the AM maybe it will affect you more during the day.

Good luck. It is a hard battle to figure this all out. Everyday is a battle for me. Just make sure your A1C is good and that is a good indicator of diabetic control.

Just learned this from my endo last week. Blood sugars are affected by exercise for 12 hours... definitely need to adjust. I actually go down 2 units of long acting on hard cardio days..
