Exercise Help

I know all of the reasons I should be exercising but it's been a year since I've done moderate exercise and two years since vigorous exercise. I was lucky because prior to that time my job was where I would get the exercise. I'd literally walk 8 miles a day as a result of my job (retail management in a big store is definitely a good place for exercise). I switched management positions approximately two years ago in a position that required less walking. One year ago I took a full time desk job (not in retail) and haven't been the least bit motivated to exercise.

I think part of my excuse (which I know I shouldn't have because exercise is good) was a 15 day hospitalization followed by a long, long recovery (several months) before I felt good enough to even feel good enough to not need 10-12 hours of sleep. I did an exercise study because of problems I mentioned in another post. Nothing in it suggests that I can't do vigorous exercise. Dr is telling me I need to do it or I'm risking my respiratory health Don't use it, lose it approach, he says. I just need to monitor o2 for drops but no need to restrict the activity as long as my o2 saturation doesn't drop. Anyway, I've now gained a significant amount of weight (I am pretty much pancreatic sufficient so I put on weight effortlessly) and it's affecting how I feel (both psyiologically and psychologically).

How did you get motivated to do exercise? I have access to a gym in my workplace/school. I also have a small gym where I live. I am not ready to do the classes at my workplace because there are no beginning ones. I am not coordinated enough or feel comfortable enough. I have access to free weights, weight machines, treadmill, stair stepper, and elliptical. I like tennis and swimming but it's too cold to do those right now. I also can't afford to hire a personal trainer, which is what I originally thought about.

Where did you start? Particularly those of you who were really out of shape and very self confident about it.

Thanks for your help!

I was in shoes similar to yours at the beginning of this year. I had my daughter a year ago and I started out 2007 in worst shape and highest weight ever. I am PS and had gained alot weight doing infertility treatments prior to conception as well. I also as a result of the infertility treatments was extremely limited to what I could do and as a result side effects tired etc did very little if anything.

You can read my blog about my get in shape journey if you are interested though I regret that I dont have them in a category, may have to change that. I started out just walking, then I would do eliptical 5 min and I thought I woudl die, I started gradually increasing my time on that until I could do a full workout 30+minutes then I started doing a circuit where I would jog a lap do a weight machine then I started just barely jogging, fall of 07 I completed a 5K for the first time. I am no working to loose my last 15-20lbs (I hate saying that here because I would just love to give them to some others so badly in need) and I am trying to get in GREAT shape.

I think you just have to find what will motivate you whether it be a rewards system, buddy system, whatever. When I started walking I loaded Harry potter books onto my mp3 to get me to walk longer and I could only listen to them when walking etc Now I have certain fitness goals and when I reach them I have rewards lined up HOWEVER my biggest reward was that in 2007 I had a 75% reduction in the # illnesss's that required meds (I also started being religiously compliant for first time).

Also just to mention that the fall of this year I started trying to work out through colds etc etc and it has helped to reduce the severity and decrease my recovery time I have fought off about 3 bad colds I thought for sure would get me on IV's and they didnt, I know a runner who says he feels a jog or a good workout it 'burns' the cold out and I really tend to believe him now though there are of course limits to when you cant do that

take care and jsut start moving

Good luck and if you want to chat I'm all ears

I was on bed rest at the end of my pregnancy, had a c-section and also gained a ton of weight. A reward system works well for me. Also mixing my routine up helps, and exercising with/around other people.

For me, it was having our daughter and being sick and tired of being, as they say, sick and tired! I also found a local community college that has an indoor pool, and a "Fitness in the Community" program. Swimming is about the only excercise that has ever appealed to me (I was on the swim team as a kid) because my mild scoliosis gives me joint issues with weight lifting, running, even no or low impact workout machines.

I just started out with a "noodle" in the pool and did what I could. Until this last bout of 4- yes, 4! colds/illnesses in a row, I was feeling the best I have in years! It helps that most of the other people who come to the pool aren't the (18 year old) students, they are older folks or moms who are trying to get back into shape too. Even though I know I have cf, it is a bit aggravating to be lapped by an 80 year old woman, lol- incentive! I can now swim 25 yards at a sprint, and not be gasping when I get to the other end . That has helped me stick with it too- seeing the progress. Good luck!
