Experiences with Paxil

Hi guys, I was put on Paxil a month ago by my doctor for anxiety. I used to be on Xanax but I didn't feel like it worked for me. Did some research on it on my own and found out Paxil is mostly given for depression (which I've never had a long-term issue with until recently). So I was taking it once a day and trying to gauge the differences. I've been on Ambien for a few months and never had issues with it until I started taking Paxil (note: I also am doing some heavy-duty research at my university the past 6 wks). My anxiety was MUCH worse, to the point where I felt like vomiting in the morning without eating anything. My stomach was just cramped up beyond belief. I also felt pretty numb to most situations, like, no emotions. This past thurday, decided to stop taking the Paxil cold-turkey. Since then, I have slept better through the night but must have horrible night sweats because my sheets are soaked in the mornings. This has never happened before, and its only been the past 3 nights. I'm guessing the sweats are a symptom of the withdrawal. I read Paxil-withdrawal can be pretty bad. My nausea hasn't been as bad and I've been able to cry and not have trouble getting sexually aroused (sry TMI!).

I'm wondering if anyone has had experiences with Paxil, or Ambien and increased anxiety along with the Paxil. I attribute most of my anxiety to the research program I'm in. But maybe it's the Paxil, or me stopping Xanax, or some drug combination. I feel like my DR should know if my drugs would interact in weird ways.

Thanks for any input.

I know my husband is on Paxil before and after his transplant. They made him go cold turkey for a few weeks because the Paxil would interfere with the new medication they wanted to put him on. He had a horrible time with anxiety and panic attacks while off the paxil cold turkey. He also said it can mess with your stomach but he hasn't had a problem with that yet.

I don't think I can be of much help to your particular situation, but I have taken Paxil before (for depression, not anxiety) and all it did was make me irritable and angry at every little thing. Maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance, but I know I didn't stay on it for very long. It took a little experimenting to find the right combination of meds that worked for me, so my only real suggestion is to ask your doc if you can try something else - it's kind of a pain in the a$$, but it's really the only way to find the right thing. Good luck!

It does take paxil awhile to build up in your system before you see any benefit from it. My husband took it for two weeks before he felt anything from it.
