I have some tobra that expires it says "May 2006", does this mean I have to stop using it now, or I can use it until the end of May? Thanks so much...sorry for being so dumb!

I hope this isn't getting off topic, but my pharmacist once said that expired meds like areosoles are generally still good past the expiration a month or two. He specified things like albuterol and atrovent, saying they just get a bit less potent... like 10% a month or so.

I suppose this isn't good for inhaled antibiotics as you want to get them full strength so as not to become resistant, but just something I heard. Anyone else hear this about using expired meds?

Using expired meds is a no-no.

The FDA has strict rules with regards to how manufacturers have to label their meds for expiration.

It's a good idea to follow the expiration date and not use any expired meds.

Not to be a negative nelly, but since when do we listen to everything the FDA tells us... lol...

I mean, when it comes to things that aren't approved, we may take them and say the federal govt. is a "joke" when it comes to approving meds and having its own initiative, yet when it comes to something like this, and medical professionals have said its ok (though not as potent), we take what the FDA says and does as law.?

I'm not advoacating taking expired meds if you have a choice. But, for things such as albuterol, though it is a medication, doesn't need to be as potent in the first place as long as you know it may be lacking cause its older... I've used up old albuterol that was a couple months expired cause I couldn't get it refilled right away, and all I ended up doing was using a couple of vials more throughout the day cause I knew it was 20% less potent (according to my pharmacist). I don't know. I guess, again, its who you talk to.

I've also taken tylenol, phenergan, aciphex, etc. that were all past their expiration date, and they all did the trick. Again, I'm not saying we should all take expired meds (just that as a last resort, I don't think its lethal).

I sort of think its a double standard if we listen to the FDA on safety aspects of drugs that have been approved, yet disregard what they have to say on non-approved meds. To me, saying you can't use something like albuterol a month or so past the expiration date, it seems like its the same people who want you to spend spend spend more money and buy more cause you MUST throw out your med if its ONE day past the expiration month. JMO though. I guess its just something that came to mind when I posted and wanted to put it out there for consideration.

(by "we", i don't mean everyone, just some people I've met....) <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I think it depends on the med.

I've been told as long Xopenex is clear its okay to use, even after the expiration date. Same with albuterol, pulmicort etc.

Anyone see the study about how long meds were actually good for past the expiration date? Interesting. I think it was done by the army or something.

Most doctors I know say most meds are okay probably a few months after expiration. The exception being antibiotics and a few others
