FAM

I am starting the FAM so I can figure out my cycles better. I was wondering if some of you FAM users can help me out with something.
Can I take my temps with an ear thermometer? I know the oral is the best way but I dont have one. Not that buying one is out of the question but I have an ear thermometer already. Have you used an ear one and do you think its good enough?
Also I stopped my b/c pills about 4 1/2 weeks ago. How soon will I get an accurate reading for my charting? I am going to start charting soon but I know the pill can mess with my cycle. How soon will it be normal?
Thanks for your help.

you can get a thermometer for very cheap at the drug store. I don't think ear thermometers are all that great for this (I don't think they are all that great anyway).

Start charting now. It will take a few cycles for you to really be able to see your patterns anyway. I think you should make sure you are also checking your cervical mucous and cervial position as well, as combining thsoe with your basal body temp are really the most accurate way to monitor your fertility and monthly cycles.

Have you read "Taking Charge of Your Fertility?"

Yes I just got done reading that book cover to cover two days ago. It has inspire me to get started with the charting. I have been monitoring my cervical fluid and the position but not temps yet. I will start charting as soon as I get the right thermometer. I am so excited about this and have learned so much about my body that I never knew existed. Its silly to be a women and not know these things. Did you rely on this method too?

You should get a basal body temp thermometer for charting. It measures temp in smaller or more specific increments. This makes it easier to notice the sometimes slight change in temp at the time of ovulation. The ear thermometers sometimes take several readings instantly and then display an average of those readings. At least that's what mine says it does. I use it for my son when he is sick. For charting, I bought a digital basal thermometer (that goes in your mouth) at Walgreens for $8-$10. The old fashioned glass basals are even cheaper.

I also think you should start charting now, with the temps. I never could get a consistant pattern of cervical mucous so the temps were my main indicator of ovulation. Of course, you may be different and should chart the mucous too.

I also read "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" and agree with you about the knowledge it provides. I have said before, I think every woman and adolescent girl should read that book just to know their bodies better. It IS silly to not know those things about ourselves. This is the method I used for my second pregnancy and I hope it helps you, too. Good luck.

I read a book called "Your Fertility Signals" and also did the charting mucus and basal temp (make sure your thermometer you purchase shows 10th of a degree). I wasn't able to do the cervix position thing regularly so did not keep track of that very well. I was off the pill for 6 months and tracked the temps/mucus this whole time. I was able to see my cycle get more and more regular and actively avoided pregnancy until month 7 when things had been regular a couple months and timing worked out well with my cf that a pregnancy then would be good. I got pregnant that month. Funny we only had sex 3 times intentionally trying to get pregnant and boom.

I can just hope that conceiving for my husband and I will be as quick and easy as yours Lauren when we are ready. Thanks for all of your insight.

I will respond here for this topic instead of the Adults section. I am sure those that aren't interested will apreciate it.
