Hi!
It's been a while since I've posted but I'm more of a reader than a writer. So here's my story...

My husband and I are in the process of adopting our little boy and in February we brought him home and I went on maternity leave. I took 7 weeks or so and then went back to work for a month and low and behold come down with a horrible cold and ended up in the hospital.

I was in the hospital for a week then home iv's for going on my 7th week now and have been back to work part time for 3 weeks. So needless to say my employer is starting to get on my case about running out of my 12 weeks of fmla and what my plans are for my job.

A little backstory here is that I've been working for this company for 3 years and hadn't been in the hospital for 2 and half of those years. So I have been fairly healthy and at work for 2 and a half years straight. Of course I have taken vacation and all that but still.

So my question is has anyone else run into the 12 weeks used up and their employer giving them a hard time about being gone so much?! I mean come on people!! I'm sorry if I adopted a child and got sick in the first half of the year but I don't need to be told how me being gone is such a hard time on the other people I work with because they are so overloaded.

It's bad enough that I feel like and outcast because I do my iv's at work and am getting used to being a mom, let alone a mom with cf. Now they tell me that my job may be in jeapordy because my time is up and you all know that there are other doctors appts in my future and who knows maybe another hospitalization. Also my little one needs all his check ups and my husband can't do it all.

I don't know I guess I just needed to vent and see what others are doing out there. I might not make sense but just remember I am a reader not a writer!

Nikki
31/cf
Nikki, does your job require you to be AT work or can you work from home at all? If you can work from home at all, you need to submit a WRITTEN disability accomodation request for them to modify your work location to your home. if you wanna chat more about it email me, services@dafcf.org

Congratulations on your adoption! How old is he? From my experience the first 2-4 years of a child's life, cf Moms get sick more often due to exposure to their germs. I don't have experience with working for a large company and FMLA benefits. I always worked for a small company. I had 10 days off. Period. It is impossible for a small company to function without everyone being top of their game and since my future was with small companies and various other reasons I decided to pursue SSDI when my son was 1 year old. I was approved in 6 wks flat. I used advice by Julie to get accepted. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made! Just food for thought...

I went over my 12 weeks and they offered me a temporary leave of absence or I could come back and if I got sick before I earned anytime back I could have problems. I took the LTD and applied for SSDI and have not gone back. I will not go back, still have my benefits from them and will ride it out as long as I can.

From an FMLA standpoint once you pass 12 weeks they can terminate you if you are not available to work, and it is legal even if it sucks.

However, given that you have CF I would definitely talk to Julie (first reply) about getting accommodations in place due to the disability. It will help protect your job and also help protect you from the harassment/BS while giving you a ton of flexibility.

Congrats on the little one, I've got 3 adopted boys.
