Hi.  I check in here every once in a while, because although we ruled out CF by genetic test, I still seriously wonder.  Concerning the fatty liver, My daughter has consistently had very low SGPT levels (well below border) and I intend to ask her GI doc about it at her next appointment.  From the research I have seen, low SGPT can mean fatty liver.  Do you if this is the case?  Isn't it true that liver problems (as well as the pancreas) can cause fat malabsorption?  Another thing.  We are currently awaiting results on a genetic test for Shwachman-diamond syndrome due to low blood counts and GI issues and a muck of other puzzle pieces that go together.  One of the primary symptoms of SDS is liver problems, along with fatty deposits in the pancreas.  (I don't know if fatty deposits in the liver also occur, or what it is that goes wrong with the liver.)  Have you ruled out SDS?  The only reason why I ask is because of the liver thing.  I think I remember that your kids have an atypical form of CF.  Just curious.  Am I remembering correctly, that often they are sick a lot with strange stuff?  The key to SDS is not being able to fight off infections.  Sorry if you've already ruled all this out.  You know better than I do.  Anyway, I sincerely wish you the best, and I'll be interested in what you find out about the fatty liver thing.  I will let you know what I learn too.

When ds was an infant his liver levels were high so he was put on actigal (bile salts) and we were told that when he was a teen they'd probably start doing ultrasounds on his gall bladder. Just one more thing about CF to throw us for a loop.

SDS didn't fit my kids, I believe, was the case when they were dx. I am not sure about SGPT?? They are sick with pretty typical CF stuff. Please keep me posted on the SDS results.

I'm not discrediting the cf component, but the tech stumbled upon a fatty liver for me a few years back while doing an abdominal ultrasound for something else. I of course freaked and read all about non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. There was a study in San Diego a while back where they checked the livers of kids up to 18 years old who had died from car accidents, falls, etc. These were non-cf kids. A large portion had fatty liver. They attributed it to the American diet, which is full of lots of preservatives and carbs. Just something to think about in addition.
